So much to like about Tuba Skinny and SC. The group is exploring a lot of the lesser-played trad tunes from the 20s and so each recording is filled with nice surprises and discoveries.

The one time I heard her playing in NOLA, she was playing trombone with Loose Marbles. She sounded good. She also can pound a piano. Doubling is a common part of NOLA trad work. More work if you can fill in on various horns and instruments.

I'm intrigued with how she's using the cup mute with her cornet to create a choked sound--which matches the sound from old recordings. It's an interesting choice. I learn a lot about leading a group by watching her videos. She's constantly cuing soloists and backgrounds, tags and endings using subtle gestures. The rest of the band watches her carefully. Certainly a band to hear and enjoy.

I really like the repertoire the group chooses to play. Hearing the lesser known tunes is a true joy. Since I have inherited the leadership of a trad band I have tried to steer the group away from the old standards. I also replaced many of the stock arrangements with lead sheets to encourage greater spontaneity. I was asked to sub for another group that played orchestrations and the best I could call it was Zombie music. The dress code was black pants and white shirts. Some of the guys sported black suspenders. It was like playing in a Mennonite dance band; okay we're playing jazz but we aren't having any fun.

She is the bomb, and has steel chops.

This thread is what turned me on to Tuba Skinny in the first place. I had the pleasure of seeing them live earlier this year. They are truly great. Shaye has the loveliest, just classic tone on her horn.

Cheers!

Meschiya and the Little Big Horns
Shotgun Jazz Band
Smoking Time Jazz Club
G and the Swinging Three
Shake 'Em Up Jazz Band
New Orleans Ragweeds
The Gentilly Stompers
Ben Fox Trio
Ben Polcer and the Grinders

Just some of the bands from the area that I've found. Many perform weekly at local clubs and tour some too. There is just a wealth of talent and many of the bands have members that split time between them. Cool stuff.
