In our brass band the cornet and trombone section use the adjustable Dennis Wick cup mute. There is no specific flugelhorn mute of the same kind from Dennis Wick. What do you use for your flugelhorn in order to acheive a similar sound. The trombone version or a mute from a different brand?

Thanks

Use a Peter Gane flugelhorn cup mute.

The Dennis Wick is metallic. Would the sound "fit"?

Yes, the Wick doesn't sound that metallic.
You don't have to match other flugels in a brass band, maybe the altos, but that's not a significant problem or sound difference with a Gane cup.

my snarky question is "Why?"..

but then if you must, get a Stone Lined cup and make sure it fits the instrument properly - like with trumpet, you may have to file the corks down.

Strange question. Maybe you use the flugel as jazz instrument. But every now and then composers write for flugel with cup mute especially in brassband and fanfare orchestras.

I know. It's just a very rare thing. IMO on the fringes of "common" use.

I've been performing as a "pro" since 1980, musicals, concert/brass bands, orchestras, quartet/quintets, in the US, Japan and Europe. I don't ever recall seeing a Flugel part asking for cup mute let alone ever seeing one in person.

I saw a straight mute requirement for Flugel, for which we used a small trombone mute.

And lastly, such a rare/specific item, I'd be pressuring the ensemble to porvide one if desired. I don't wish to spend $50 - $100 for something I'll use for a very short time.

I totally agree. I do think that especially in the top brassbanding world stranger and stranger stuff is being written, cup/wahwah for flugel, basses, practice mutes. Using cello bows on melodoc percussion, singing, etc etc.

A trombone mute just didn't work on my Benge 3 flugel - the intonation was awful. I have a Trumcor straight mute that I tried to turn into a cup mute by cutting the end off a heavy cardboard cone at a point that it would slip (slide) over the straight section of the mute. It actually worked very well. The tone was quite usable, and with good intonation. The cardboard cone cost only $9 (cdn) and works well enough for the one piece a season I need it for our brass band.

I was motivated by the Canadian Amazon price of a Humes & Berg that is listed for $135! And what about this aluminum straight mute?

I have a standard H&B stonelined cup mute to match my trumpet cup mute. I need to file the corks a little bit because the cup is a little bit too far from the bell rim, but it does the job in the traditional manner.

Part number 186. Link:
