Hi. I play trumpet for 8 years. I can play quite good, but i have really bad embouchure. My teacher tells me that i am too much pressing on upper lip, but this is the only way i can play. I think i have bad embouchure. My lower lip is quite offset on left. I don't know how to fix my embouchure. please help me.

Hello Peter,

Since you are in this forum, I feel free to recommend to get the BE book. But since you also seem confused, it may be a good idea to see if you could arrange a lesson as well, either in person or through Skype, to get you started and to help you ease your mind as to what you're doing.

BE is designed to help you teach yourself. Get the book, read it carefully, and follow the exercises. It will guide you to an embouchure that works best for you. Like anything worth doing, you must (a) follow directions, (b) stick with it, and (c) practice diligently. The folk in this forum, and of course Jeff himself, are available and willing to help you along.

Do not expect a quick fix.
Do expect significant long-term benefits.

FWIWFM - Don

I have a similar issue but I don't think it is as severe. I have been told that my lips are not 50/50 on my mothpiece (more like 30/70) which could limit my range and endurance. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks a lot!!

Read the book, do the exercises, and throw away the mirror.

The BE approach does not specify mouthpiece positioning, other than mentioning that a too-low placement (down into the red of the top lip) is often the result of trying to play higher by pinning a smaller piece of lip meat in the cup. In that case, limitations in range and tone are usually apparent.

In BE, the tone you get when doing the exercises is the biggest factor in telling if you are on the right track. It's the prime reason that a CD is enclosed. Depending on your lip architecture, a reasonable tone is possible with either a high or low (or 50/50) mouthpiece placement.
