People have refered to "That Bach Sound", and to my ear, there is such a thing. However, I haven't heard anything that sounds as SWEET as those vintage Martin Committee's. I'm not just talking Miles Davis, etc. Listen to Chris Botti, Mark Isham or other current artists. My question is about the NEW Martin Committee's. Osmun music has some bells from Vintage Committee's that they use on current model Committee's. Does anyone here have an opinion? Would the bell replacement alone make that much difference? My understanding is that Osmun has a good reputation.

I've played a few of the "revamped" Martin horns with the "old" bells and they do make a HUGE difference.

It's much more like an old Committee. The new Martins are really nothing like the vintage ones in terms of bore, leadpipe shape, bell taper, and craftsmanship.

If you're looking for a Committee you have a few options.

1. Buying an old one and restoring it (or if it's good enough just playing on it as is)
2. Revamping your current committee at Osmun (I won't take my horns anywhere but Osmun...they're the best in my opinion)
3. Checking out the new Lawler Committee, which I'm sure is an excellent product.

Feel free to email me off-list for any particulars.

Best,

Trent

Trent,

just curious: What do you think about the new Committees? I don´t mean in comparison to vintage Committees, but as trumpets in general? I have heard both good and bad things about them.

I've played about 10 "new" committee horns, including one of Wallace Roney's and Clark's Blue one.

To me they all felt poorly made and didn't project at all. The bell shape was like a Bach 72 and not like the old horns. The bore is not 453 like the old ones, the leadpipe taper was too "bachish" for my taste. All in all the new Committee horn felt and sounded like a clumsy LR 72 Bach.

The vintage committees had much more life to their sound, in my opinion.

The revamped committee is a great option as I've played a few of the horns that Osmun has done. By simply replacing the bell you get a much truer sound.

If you're not interested in saving money don't forget the Marcinkiewicz Coppola-- a copy of John Coppola's the large bore #3 Committee. That's what I play and it's really a fabulous horn.

Trent am I right in thinking the Lawler TL6L-1 is also designed to sound like the Vintage Committee?

Oh, I wish I could afford that Marcinkiewicz Coppola horn... Johnny C. is my former trumpet teacher (and friend)... Time to play the lottery.
