A student of mine wants to attend a summer music camp in the US.
We've narrowed it down to BUTI and Interlochen.

Has anyone attended BUTI?

I'm familiar with Interlochen but not with BUTI.
BUTI audition requirements seem more advanced/harder.
And I assume there are less spots at BUTI.

The BUTI website states that it accepts applicants from age 14. My student is 14 years old.
Do spots fill up according to best audition only? Or, does age weigh in, too?

Example:
A really good 14 year old submits a recording outstanding for his/her age. But it can't compete with the 19 year old applicants' recordings.
Who gets selected?

I attended Interlochen for five summers, and also spent my senior year preparing for college auditions at their academy.

Throughout my time there, I've met people who have attended both camps. A horn playing friend of mine said that the main difference she noticed between the two was that the string section seemed a little more advanced, but the winds and brass were fairly similar.

Judges typically rank the audition tapes from best down and do not take age into factor. As per your example, the 19 year old would be selected.

The applicant pool to these festivals differ every year, and I would encourage your student to apply to both. At Interlochen, I believe a 14 year old would be placed into the intermediate(middle school) division, and get a chance to play more than they would if they were competing against people with more experience. I spent my first summer as an intermediate and really enjoyed it.

" ... the main difference she noticed between the two was that the string section seemed a little more advanced ... "

But which string section?

Sorry about that! I meant to say the strings at BUTI were a little better.

Thanks for feedback.

The student, his parents, and I agreed to apply to both camps.
He's been accepted into Interlochen, and is on the waiting list for BUTI.
He's hoping for BUTI, but will go to Interlochen if BUTI turns him down.

You might consider having your student apply for our MPulse program at the University of Michigan next year. It's a program that focuses heavily on extensive college preparation, fundamentals and performance.
