hello Turkle
sorry for this...
maybe contact Dario Frate, he has a lot of combinations to offer and really knows his job; he'll give you very good advices.

It's all good! It was worth a shot and now I know. I'm not even sad, I'll just get the top sawn off at some point and use it as a screw-top to experiment with different backbores, etc.

Anyway, I posted here more as a warning to other brass players than anything else. Look out!

I'm often a Bach 3 enthusiast, and opened the throat to a 14. The backbore, the 10, on the non-letter Bachs is tighter than say, the A or B cup backbores. While the Bach 3 is deep as night, you can get upstairs easier thanks to that backbore. Intonation is "different" up there, but not crazy. The sound is warm and wonderful, used it for one piece on my new CD, and Botti uses a similar config. No problems on his upper register, best I can tell!

I had some good results with large volume cups and smaller throats/backbores. For a while a was on a Warburton 4MD with a 4 Backbore and still had a solid upper register. Mind you, it wasn't bright by any means but it was solid.

Even a shallow cup paired with a tight backbore can be a gamble. For example, I have a Curry 3Z.. that comes stock with his 50S backbore, a tight commercial backbore. For me, it's the flattest-playing mouthpiece I have when I push it above the staff. Seriously, High C is closer to a B, and trying to lip it up does nothing but pop it up to the next partial. I've been trying to sell it to no avail, so I'm considering either chopping off the top to be threaded or just opening the throat and backbore to make it useable. It does have a nice burning sound.

I've found that anything smaller than a Bach 10 doesn't work for me, no matter what cup use, and even if larger the backbore also needs to be the right shape.
