This method book rocks. Unlike the Arban, it offers a sequential, not fragmented, layout of exercises. And the early exercises are more beginner-friendly than the Arban. Later on, some of the music is very nice.
(Make no assumptions, I think the Arban is great. But for some reason, the St. Jacome and the Franquin seem to have been relegated [at least for Americans] to a further-back shelf, and I'm not sure for good reason.)
If you get a chance, check it out.

I am adult starting my 2nd year. After switching among different books I am mainly using at the moment "Embouchure builder" by Lowell Little for lipslur and Walter Beeler Cornet method (although I am playing trumpet). I like the Beeler method because it is very gradual (I am building range very slowly) and is very cheap! What I do not like is that it has many "twinkle twinkle" style tunes. I am reading many good reviews about the Franquin method, and seems to be it is also very gradual, but it is quite expensive. Do you think it is worth to switch? My long term goal is Jazz but I need good fundamentals. |

Cool. I recall Tim mentioned he might arrange to print hard copies.

The print copy from Enoch is expensive, around 100 euro, I think. There's a new English translation available from qpress.ca in PDF, and now in print format too, according to kehaulani. The PDF is $40 USD. (I don't know the print price.)
The Franquin book is great for fundamentals. It starts with embouchure response and sound production to a much greater extent than most other methods. Franquin built his whole method around that as a foundation for playing.
The other fundamentals are well covered, sometimes with a different, better approach than other methods. For example, lip slurs start at a very basic level, even simpler than Lowell Little, and gradually go beyond where most methods leave off. His lip slur drills cover multiple partials to a greater extent than other lip flexibility drills.
I was practicing multiple tonguing out of Franquin the other day, and again he approached it differently than other methods. But I like his approach better, because it places more emphasis on developing the "ka" syllable to be just as independent, controlled and reliable as the "ta" articulation. Great stuff. _________________ Bb Yamaha Xeno 8335IIS

Hi everyone, I am glad you guys are digging the Franquin translation. I am slowing working on print books, and I am able to send out print copies of the Franquin at this time (I am just offering it to people on trumpetherald for now.)
If you are interested, just click here and order a copy from me, then send me a PM on here on through the qPress contact form to let me know that you wanted a print edition sent.
Hope to hear from you guys!

The download and print price were the same. I wouldn't count on that lasting long, though, because qPress must also recoup costs for paper and shipping, although I can't speak for them.
Dbfinn and others. I would not wait for a discounted price. This volume is very big. (They have a lot of cost to recoup.)
Regarding downloading the free version (in French), if you are only an English speaker, there is a heck of a lot of important text you would be deprived of.
(Tim, take this as notice that I received the book thereby saving me an email :0. BTW, the shipping wrap was very good.) _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Glad it arrived in great shape!
You are right that the price 39.99 won't stay like that forever, but I am using this opportunity to offer a good deal to trumpetherald users while I work on the shipping fulfillment system. |

The book is really excellent; I'm completely puzzled as to why this is the first English translation (or at least it is the first of which I'm aware.)
Highly recommended!! Some wonderful material and explanations.

The thing I have realised since qPress became a thing is just how many friggin' trumpet books there are out there. Just on qPress there is currently 366 'Trumpet Methods and Etudes'. I mean, holy moly, how are we not all better at playing already? ha!
Tim - What about us not in North America? Can we still order? There's no additional shipping added at checkout so I'm guessing you're not setup for that yet |

Any print deals for those of us who have already ordered the download version?
Thanks!

|
|
Regarding the printed English version of the Merri Franquin, can anyone comment regarding the ease of use of the book?
I mean, my Arban's is spiral bound - very easy to use.
My St. Jacome is not spiral bound - really inconvenient.
Thanks in advance. _________________ Michael Greenberg

Hi everyone, sorry to not be responding, I have stopped getting notifications about this thread for some reason.
Answers:
1: Yes, spiral bound it is, with full colour gloss front and back cover
2: Shipping Internationally: Yes it can be free within Europe. If you are outside of Europe I can figure it out if you PM me your address, hopefully it can be elsewhere as well.
People are loving it, we sold out at ITG in the first half day!
Be in touch with any questions,
Tim |
