|

It was mentioned on this forum before that many great players ritually stick their tongue out when setting the embouchure. Virtually all trumpet players I've seen who follow that chop setting ritual have excellent range, so there definitely is a correlation (though not necessarily causation). However, I am curious about the advantages of doing that both from a TCE and non-TCE perspective?
James Morrison
Maurice Andre
Bryan Davis
I've tried it recently the way Morrison does it (it seems the tip of the tongue comes out too?) but my jaw seems to be not sufficiently open that way.
For the record: I did ask the awesome lead trumpet player Bryan Davis recently about the use of his tongue to which he replied "I'm not actively doing anything with my chin" and "my tongue is definitely NOT touching my lower lip".

Is that maybe intended to moisten the lips? That's what I assumed when I saw that... |

Most trumpet players play with a wet embouchure and thus have to lick their lips before playing. Yet I think that the people I refer to do it in a particular way and I am curious about why they are doing that specifically and whether there are particular advantages to doing it that way from a TCE perspective. |

Non-TE, but Chalie Porter advocates for it in his "Set-up" YT video. He goes into some detail what he feels it does and why he recommends it. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Watch Harry James vids and you'll see him do the ice cream lick everytime before he blows that first note. _________________ GeorgeB

@GeorgeB: Could you post a video of James doing that? I've not been able to find one myself so far.
@Trumpetplanet: Yeah, I've read through these threads, but they got off topic quite quickly and didn't go into much detail about "how and why exactly" to do it. Do you still use something like that in your regular playing or when practicing?
EDIT: Just found a good one: |
