Just noticed the comparator links I had are both broken - and I'm seeing no sign of the comparator on the updated website?

I know it's always been easy to be misled by it (individual scans not being representative of current production models, for starters), but I for one shall miss having that resource available.

Here's hoping Kanstul will reinstate it at some point... or that someone else will be willing to host something comparable instead.

None of my mouthpieces have ever seen the Comparator. How did people get by pre-Comparator? All my my mouthpieces are pre-1950 with just a C for cornet on them? No stats and no reviews. Maybe you just played it.

Indeed - people got by before and they'll get by again...

But you know what they say: knowledge is power.

And with a little caution, the comparator was an incredibly valuable resource.

The "2.0" doesn't seem to have the images archived, but the older (black screen) version works on the Internet Archive Wayback machine:

The Kanstul site says the mouthpiece catalog is "under construction". Perhaps the comparator will return when they are finished.

It's about time they updated it. Some of the scans were ENTIRELY not even representative of an average mouthpiece. They really need to scan at least 10 copies and submit the average of all of them, to even be slightly relevant.

Plus, they're missing MANY brands that many people use today. I always wished you could recommend mouthpieces to scan.

Jim New on his website has a mouthpiece comparator working and he adds models from time to time.

He does, and the resolution is much better.... But there are very few scans on there of pieces he doesn't make.

I don't know whether he has an agreement with kanstul to not publish more scans (though I believe he has access to them?), but it'd be nice to see him add a lot more to his page - I wouldn't be opposed to him plastering it with ads and generating revenue from it either.

The scans represent the mpcs made by Kanstul, which basically meant Jim New.

I'm not sure of the cost of scanning, but nobody does it for free.

I suppose you have all more insight and more knowledge than me but I believe that the comparators are boy's toy's with at maximum an indicating worth and in fact they made me make more mistakes with them than without them. And believe me, I have/had a lot of mouthpieces.

Wonder how many who used the comparator (and/or complained about it) actually bought mouthpieces from Kanstul? Hopefully they do derive some benefit (profit) from it...

It's a good question - I have considered buying many times. But in the end you are gambling on (essentially) a custom mouthpiece for $140 with little re-sale value. Compare to picking up a used Name Brand on eBay for $20 which you can re-sell for about the same price.

If they could monetize the comparator, that would be great for them and for us. Someone mentioned ads. I would pay a subscription ($5/yr) to get access. Particularly if they expand it with new mouthpieces - doesn't have to be comprehensive, just add pieces over time. I'd love to see a Marcinkiewicz on there, their rims have some magic sauce that I want to see.

Hi

http://www.kanstul.com/MPcompare/MouthpieceComparator.html

This link seems to work ok.

Regarding buying Kanstul mouthpieces, all mine were Kanstul and are now a mixture of Kanstul and James R New (I continued to use Jim New when he left Kanstul). Admittedly however mine are the same custom top (copy of my own particular 2005 Bach 3C, so obviously not one of the Kanstul scans) with standard backbores.

I don't however tend to use the Kanstul backbore comparator, as I find it harder to compare backbores than cups.

All the best

Lou

I think in some cases knowledge is not power it is weakness.

I never found any value in the comparator, when it comes down to it there are so many factors in the mix that knowing fine detail differences between mouthpieces is just chasing shadows.

How does it blow

The Kanstul Comparator is back up, but a large percentage of the mouthpieces scans that were available in the past are missing. Any ideas if they'll be bringing back the others?
