Anyone played or have opinions on one of these?

Internet searches give a couple of positive reviews and say it's a pro level instrument.

May be able to pick one up cheaply (but not play beforehand) and wondered if it would be good for commercial work?

Thanks

We had a local store push these for a few years, always wondering why they didn't sell too well...

Lots of money for not very much horn was my impression. Your buck can buy much more bang with other brands.

cheers

I'm sure Mike Williams would disagree.

Comparatively speaking, they're less expensive horns here in the US, but I haven't read a lot about them, either. I believe they're constructed in France, but I wonder if some of the parts are made by Carol (like the valve block).

That's not bad, just an observation.

I think Mike was playing a couple of Calicchios before, maybe a 1S2 and an R37? The question is, how would it work for you? Better to try before you buy unless you know that it's a great deal and you could recoup your investment.

Regarding P. Mauriat horns generally:

John McNeil has been playing his PMT-700 for years and always seems happy about it at my lessons with him. He gets a warm sound out of it that he can quickly move around the horn and color in different ways.

Terell Stafford has also been playing his PMT-700 for a few years. So if seems like they get "a lot of horn" out of it - neither John or Terell would choose to play on mediocre equipment for years, so I'd be surprised if they weren't well-built, quality horns.

I trued a P.Mauriat 700 a few years ago, and it was an excellent horn. Depending on the player, it could be an excellent lead horn.

I believe they make all their instruments in Taiwan.

I doubt those guys are playing stock horns though. The horn you pick up at your local retailer is not gonna necessarily be the same horn they are playing. They have a PMT-700 (or whatever) built and tweaked to their liking i would assume? If someone else knows this not to be the case I'm sure they will chime in.

That being said, i have played a few of the PMT-700s. They were nice horns. Not what i personally would choose. But i could make due with them.

Thanks for the replies all.
I think I'll try it out and see.

I have seen a 700 model for sale which seems to be a more popular horn but for over $1,200 US so out of my price range for a second horn.

I met Terell a couple of summers ago, he was playing the P. Mauriat horn. He didn't say anything about it being a special one. I won't go into it here, but he told me a story about workmanship problems with the horns he was endorsing before that.

I owned and played a P. Mauriat 700 for several years then sold it. I regret doing that. I will, when I have the opportunity, purchase another 700. They're great instruments. Wonderful balance in the hands, terrific sweet sound and can kick when punched. Check out Terrell. Terrell, by the way, is playing stock 700. I don't see any parts on the Mauriat that could relate to Caroll Brass. The Mauriat is its own animal.
