|
|
I am looking for references for engraving, I just acquired a 1946 Chicago Benge trumpet that was silver plated at some point in time. The buffer got a little overzealous and I would like to have the original engravings on the bell and valves restored. The music bars and notes are now faint and the lettering needs to be sharpened up. The valve numbering and serial numbers need to be sharpened up and the BENGE logo at the bottom of the 2nd valve needs to be recreated.
I tried Artistic Engraving and got the following response "I am no longer accepting this type of work. Unfortunately I do not have anyone to refer you to for this type of restoration."
Internet searches have not been fruitful so I am hoping that I might find help here.
Thanks |

Jason Dumars might be a possibility if Sherry Huntley/Artistic Engraving cannot help you.
I suspect there may be some other folks flying under the radar. Consider reaching out to some of the well regarded techs for a referral or possibly touch base with Kantul. I seem to recall seeing an Olds Recording copy that they made. Somebody good enough to do that engraving should be capable of helping you with your project. |

She didn't tell you why she wouldn't do it? That's weird... |

The full response from her email, "Thank you for your interest in restoring the BENGE stamped logo. I am no longer accepting this type of work. Unfortunately I do not have anyone to refer you to for this type of restoration." |

Yeah, that's probably not enough to justify bumping a much larger engraving project over for her, not to try and put words in her mouth.
Asking her to recut a stamped logo and nothing else, is a bit like expecting Mario Andretti to show up in a Lotus F1 car when you call for an Uber. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

The OP didn't say he had any particular time constraint or any expectation that his job would be given any degree of priority. In view of the fact that Sherry holds herself out to be an engraver it is not the least bit unreasonable or disrespectful for the OP, or anyone, to inquire about hiring her to do the job she holds herself out to do, even if the job is minimal.
I suggest that the OP contact Jason Dumars. Another option is to contact Josh Landress in NYC and ask for recommendations. _________________ HERMOKIWI |

When one has enough work to make a living one is rewarded by being able to turn down jobs they don't find interesting. |

If I'm not mistaken Sherry is slowing down and looking toward her retirement. Good news is she's made herself available to the members of NAPBIRT providing instruction at a recent workshop. Perhaps someone will emerge from the field to carry on her fine work. _________________ James Becker

Sherry does incredible work!
When I was looking for an engraver for my Martin, Landress Brass said either Artistic Engraving or Jason Dumar were the best bets! Both do amzing work from what I could see from their websites and eventually from Sherry's work on my Martin.
There is a possibility that your bell has been buffed down too much to re-engrave again!? If Sherry does not have time for it, then talk to Jason Dumar.
Also ask some of the top horn repairmen for recommendations.
That's what I would do.
Best of luck!

Keep in mind that the Benge logos were stamped, not engraved. Engraving is going to look different than stamping.
You could also consider this fellow, who did a fantastic job for me on an Olds Super:

Since it's not an heirloom, I would be inclined to leave it. If it bothers you that much, sell this one and buy another.

Sherry did alot of work for me over the last 18 years . She has had problems with carpal tunnel syndrome due to repetetive strain injury through her work as an engraver. Late last year she informed she was no longer able to engrave. She was the best in the industry in my humble opinion. I gather she had been thinking of retiring anyway. I am aware that Adams in holland use a very good engraver though I dont know his name

To follow up on this fairly dormant thread I will share that Sherry is doing "limited work" for the time being. She has a FB page (Artistic Engraving) and while she told me that she is "officially retired" she occasionally accepts work.
I was lucky enough to have her show some love to my beloved Martin Committee Deluxe and I'm just amazed at the quality and her efficiency.

Looks like great work to restore that. Jealous that you were able to get her to do it. Have you had the Martin long? _________________ Schilke, Kanstul, Benge, Getzen |
