Just got a follow up on my reply for an inquiry that was sent to me for my marketplace listing,

"Good to hear back from you, i am located in WA. i am buying the item
for my Dad as a surprise gift, i am okay with the price, i am a
marine engineer at this moment i am presently working offshore,
sometimes access to regular emails and phone calls are very poor in
offshore due to inefficiency of phone and internet connections, more
so we are often constrain from accessing the internet or making phone
calls, i insisted on PayPal because i don't have access to my bank
account online and i don't have internet banking too, but i can pay
from my PayPal account as i have my bank a/c attached to it, you don't
need to bother yourself about the shipment because i have a pick-up
agent that will come for the pick-up they will also determine and
secure the shipment, get back to me with your PayPal email address so
that i can make the payment, i will also need you to provide me with
the following information in order to facilitate the payment.

1.Your Full name.Your
PayPal Email Address.
3.Your phone number.

Kind Regards"

We've seen this before. It's amazing how many marine engineers are buying horns and have their own "pick-up agents".

Thanks for the warning. For me, anything out of the ordinary is a potential scam.

I posted a couple trumpets for sale last night on TH and got two questionable solicitations from the same person on two totally different horns almost immediately. I wish there was a way to filter these out from answering the Marketplace. Is this guy legit? campbellbana007@gmail.com

Here's the email I got: Their message: I'm interested in your Wild Thing Bb Trumpet,How long have you owned it and how much are you asking for it?please i can only pay using Paypal.email me pictures. campbellbana007@gmail.com

Except for the horn, the other solicitations are identical and price and pictures are in the add. Looks like a fishing expedition to me.

I actually am a marine engineer who uses the marketplace from time to time but i don't have my own shipping agent. It irks me that my profession is being used as a cover story by scammers.

I had a similar email. Person wanted to use PayPal but have it picked up as she is a flight attendant traveling all the time. Five emails back and forth with this last email to have the item picked up. Just for the fun of it, I told her I was a pilot for the same airlines and we could meet in one of the hubs. It is a shame that these people try to take advantage of good people.

Yeah, actually I should of went along with it and taken the payment and when the time came to meet the pick up agent, I would have the cops waiting for him.

Incase any of you don't know how the scam works, the buyer sends you paypal, tells you he is out at sea or is a constant traveller and cannot receive the package him/herself and has arranged a "pick-up agent" to pickup the item after he/she has paid. Bingo, that's where you lose, a few days later Paypal sees that you didn't ship out the item with tracking (which you're supposed to do) and the buyer opens a dispute saying they didn't receive the item and you with no record of you ever shipping the item out are out the money and the horn.
