Situation:

Married, no kids, not real close to a "name" college but within one hour +/- of the Cincinnati Conservatory.

Just started 3rd year of HS teaching.

Spouse is also a music teacher in 3rd year of teaching.

I realize each situation is different...but...would it be worth it to take time off from HS job next year and get Masters....or not?

Opinions and thoughts.

The biggest question is will your spouse be able to support you and your kids with just her salary alone? I'm certain they have scholarships available, but you'll be competing against students who are probably able to put in more practice time than I would assume you may currently have available to you with job and family.

Another thing to consider is meeting the professor to build a relationship with them. It would most likely help your chances of getting a scholarship if the prof. really wants you to come there.

Good luck!

Yeah, a few points or questions for consideration... A few mentioned already..

Can your spouse support you? You live in the Ohio, so this shouldn't be too much of an issue.

What are your goals for the degree? Are you just trying to get your bump for your teaching salary, or do you have career aspirations different from your current path? If you're just trying to get your teaching pay bump, a master's from any school, in any subject will do. You could choose an online program so you can continue working, and pick a degree with more job prospects...

Do you have the money for it? Are you okay with taking out student loans for a Master's that may not provide a financial return on investment?

There are a lot of variables involved, but the most important is probably what you hope to do with your master's once you get it.

One final thought... Your profile says you live in Pickerington, OH. OSU is in your backyard and they (at least in the past) have had pretty good assistantship programs, where you can get your tuition waived and get a stipend for being a grad assistant. Why is that not one of the options you're considering?

I'm no expert but I'd say OSU is a "name" college.

1. I'm sure Mr. Leasure appreciates that.
2. It depends on all of the other variables I mentioned earlier in my post. Maybe UC is out of the question due to money. Maybe op is getting their MEd degree and doesn't need the conservatory atmosphere... etc...
