I'm looking for a very compact case for travelling with my beater horn - one maybe in a shape similar to a tpt gig bag, but hardside. Is that out there anywhere?

I'd recommend the Protec Slimline. Dillons still shows the older model which I own/prefer, with the older (lower) price...

Reunion Blues RBX seems pretty slim.

Also, the Eastman single looks to be about the slimmest hard case I've seen.

The Eastman single. Form-fitted fiberglass-shell case. I've used mine for travel with a single horn for about 7 years and it's great.

SKB makes a contoured trumpet case that is going to be pretty small - just big enough for a horn and a mouthpiece - but it doesn't look like it's quite as sturdy as the Eastman case, although it would be about $40 less expensive.

I'll second the Eastman single fibreglass case.. solid protection, shoulder strap, but very little room for anything else - mouthpiece, oil, and a cloth

For a little more space, the Protec Slimline - I'm very happy with my Protec cases: light, protective and durable.

These cases are actually a little sturdier than the Eastman cases, BUT they lack D rings for attaching a strap, which is a deal breaker for me when traveling. Who the hell wants to be derping around with a trumpet in one hand while lugging suitcases?

The Eastman case has multiple D rings, and a single strap can be attached in a way that lets the bell sit above the shoulder when on the back with a single strap. You can also attach two straps for a backpack-style setup, but that seems silly with this light and small of a case.

i have several SKB contoured cases and love them for traveling

very light and protect just fine. i also added extra D rings and made myself a
backpack setup by adding some clip on straps when i need that option

i also have 2 walt johnson cases that are fantastic but too heavy for me

i also want an Eastman to try out but they are much more expensive than the SKBs

SKB gets my vote

Occasionally you will also see form-fitted cases from the 1920s on eBay.

The case the Besson 609 came in is pretty small - the smallest I've seen that is hard-sided and has storage.

I've admired this case - but don't want/need the YTR-1335 that comes with it.
Gary.

Here's a slim vintage case, and no extra for the rust...

For travelling and real protection a leather Torpedo Laredo is pretty hard to beat..

Absolutely true, as long as you don't mind an awkwardly bulky case that is abnormally heavy, doesn't fit in small overheads of planes, and is too wide and long to fit in all the airline travel sizers.

Reunion Blues also makes a single case that is even more streamlined than the RBX, although I am not sure of the model name or number. I bought both at NAMM this year. The more streamlined model has semi-hard fiberglass like shell but no storage for anything. The mouthpiece and valve oil must be placed inside the case with the horn.

Well it's fitted in all the overhead lockers on all the planes I've travelled in. And has always been allowed as hand luggage.

I found a square hard case on eBay, new, Chinese made of course, for my beater horn. I had to re-glue the lining and the mouthpiece socket a little bit, but for 40 bucks, I'm cool with that. Shoulder strap rings and strap. Small storage area that'll fit rag, oil, and a sshh mute. Flew to Baltimore with it yesterday on Southwest just fine.

Now you might want to be first on on a little commuter plane and it's tiny overhead bins.

You're probably thinking of the continental single, it actually fits under most airplane seats!

It is also pretty protective too...
