Here's another quick video I just uploaded to You Tube. I am showing the differences between a cornet and a trumpet (for non musicians/relatives/FB friends), and played a few quick bars of Gershwin's "Someone To Watch Over Me".
Cornet - Bach 7C MP
Trumpet - Curry 3M MP

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eutpWZHsKTE

P.S. I am dressed like that on a Saturday, because I am getting ready for a buddy's wedding this afternoon, and am multi-tasking, trying to make a video, practice music, get myself ready, getting hollered at by my wife, who is also getting ready... *sigh*

....Maybe it's just been a very bad day today...and I was always taught as a youngster that; "if you can't say somethiong nice then don't say anything".....but for 54 years the cornet (not the cornette, that's a quite different instrument) was a major part of my whole life.......

.......Why, did you make the video and what on earth is this about, please?

Uh... I was just making a video showing the differences between the horns, and decided to post it here too. If you want me to remove it, just say so.

To me your cornet looks like a "long" one - right? Question asked because
I live my life doubling sort of on a short shepherd´s crook cornet and a
rather bright Bach Commercial. Very different animals. I also have a cornet, long model, Getzen 300 series and I can make that one sound more open than the short one, Getzen Custom Series. Not at all like the trumpet though.
And - the way you sound makes me wonder about the importance of "attitude" when blowing. I get the feeling you have different attitudes so to speak, cornet more restrained?? Might be your´e getting hollered at makes you sneak under the radar a bit Me playing when wife´s dressing makes her, ehh, somewhat fidgety!

It's a regular "student" cornet from Olds.... It's my very first cornet and even though I don't care for the 7C MP that I bought (I had to get one, as it was missing in the eBay auction), I am discovering the tones of a cornet versus a trumpet.

This is the sound of the cornet;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKEqH0PmkaQ

.....listen to the slow passage and hear the sound at the end of the phrases...note the sweetness and that the 'hard' sounding passages don't shreak or scream but have 'edge'.... notice that in the 'pp' passages the sound is essentially the same.

This is the sound of the trumpet, (played by a virtuoso cornet player)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt_ydZAq3Mk

notice that the sound is much more 'treble' and bright compared to the cornet.....hear that even in the 'pp' passages the sound is still bright and fresh...the sound is regal and 'heraldic' compared to the cornets sweetness.

Thank you... I've played trumpet ever since 4th grade in school, but never owned a cornet (until now). Basically I was curious about the differences in tone and styles.

Edit: Incredible videos! How, they were amazing!

And here is the sound of an AMERICAN cornet playing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2haVZc--rC8

Some say the difference between the two horns is great, some say that some cornets sound just like trumpets. To me, it depends on the era of the music, national characteristics and the equipment, itself. In which case you can say they are different sounding instruments.

You are playing two different makes/models and two different mouthpieces. Plus, as mentioned, there may be a difference in your perceived difference in horns that manifest in how you play them.

Wow, that was beautiful!!! See, that's the sound I hear in my head from a cornet. A type of beautiful singing tone... A sweet brass sound that you could play in church...

I´m blessed with a lifetime (soon 60 years) in a brassband, UK style, playing solocornetchair most of the time. You should try to find a brassband - awesome sound! As you write "singing". Indeed! Of course you could make a trumpet sing - but - if our brassband director hears somebody sound "trumpetish" he´s prone to get a fit.

I maintain that "attitude" is involved in this - in my experience you do not play the cornet the way you play the trumpet, one reason for the differences; different kind of tubing, nodes not on the same places, different kinds of mpc (=based on the clip provided by JJMDestino aug 17: (https://ccrma.stanford.edu/marl/Benade/documents/Benade-Trumpet-1973.pdf)affecting the soundwave etc.
So I would say different animals! Thinking of brass band versus bigband, I would say different herds too!

What do you mean here with 'American cornet'?

ButchA: can be my fault but I have never heard of a Bach short shank cornet mouthpiece.

GENERALLY speaking, the American Brass Band playing is more brighter sounding then the BRITISH brass Band Sound.

Bob Stevenson and kehaulani posted a good example of that.

I assume the two main reasons are the sound concept we have in our mind and the mouthpieces (deep vs. more shallow)we use.

Sorry about that... I was already corrected on the MP description. It's a standard Bach 7C cornet MP.

Finally got a chance to listen to the video. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Totally different sound and I loved your easy approach to the whole thing.

Thank you! I never played cornet before and I wanted to learn the differences between the two, so I made a video of it.

I will alternate between 2nd chair trumpet in the "Million Dollar Band" and the cornet on certain pieces that we play.

Putting a 7C in a cornet should probably require you to stop calling it a cornet anymore.

Unless aforementioned mpc is a Denis Wick Ultra 7C
Deep enough for a small bird (colibri?)taking a bath but diameter 16,25 (instead of my lifetime 17,06).
Plus the appropriate attitude. Lead chair heroism out of question.
