Figured this would be a good a place as any. Does anyone know anything about bagpipes? Really want to get into it but I just don't know where to start. Any tips or places to purchase equipment would be helpful. I know I need to start on a practice chanter but that's about it.
Thanks!

You can contact "The House of Musical Traditions" (HMT) in Takoma Park, Maryland.

Bagpipe player is sitting in a bar, looking very depressed. Bartender says " what's wrong man?" Bagpipe player says " I left my bag pipes in the backseat of my car, and someone broke in." Bartender says " oh no, they stole your bag pipes?" Bagpipe player says "No, they left two more in the back seat."😉

Play on Sir John Barbarolli's comment: Highland pipes sound like two skeletons fornicating on a tin roof.

Serious about my original post, (HMT). And you can start more cheaply, and get good fundamentals, by starting with a practice chanter. Check with HMT.

A gentleman is a man who can play the bagpipes, but doesn't.

Guess I pushed the wrong button - try again:

I don't particularly like highland pipes, but when the pipes cranked up as we (band and pipes) marched into Red Square, it raised the hair on the back of my neck up.

Coincidentally, I am about to learn how to play the pipes.
Both Highland, and Uilleann pipes.

The sad back-story here ... is the chap that will be teaching me has terminal cancer. An old band-mate.
We were in a Celtic / Irish Roots jazz band (! believe-it-or-not !) together. I played the Cittern, Mandocello, DADGAD-tuned guitar, and Mandolin. He played both the aforementioned pipes, as well as electronic-pipes (played through an amplifier, and no bag or bellows). He also played accordion and steel drums (Caribbean style).

Check with your local cops- likely they have a piper around for ceremonies, etc. Couple of the Polk Co Deputies work gun shows here and on early Sunday mornings before the show opens they put on their skirts and play. They've conned me into playing trumpet along with them a few times. They actually have an entire drum and pipes group that does ceremonial work around the state. Make their money going bar to bar on St Patrick's Day. Always funny to hear the commander yell out before they leave to go the next place- "Alright, everyone, let's do Ireland, The Brave!"

I played Fleugel at a memorial service. I did not know a piper was invited, as well.

He and I chatted before the performance. We decided to play "Amazing Grace" (together). Little did I know how difficult it would be trying to get tuned to the pipes. I believe they are atonal. Somewhere (?) / vaguely pitched in D or G ... or, thereabouts.

Lesson learned.

My fondest memory of last year was playing a duet with a piper just after the bomb that killed so many in Manchester England.

He was at the top of his range and we blended just fine. It was unarranged we just met on the street and played right then.

Wow! Play like her. And these days, wearing that dress would probably help the OP, too.
