Bought a trumpet unseen. Was very dirty but I liked the way it played very much, though it played stuffy.
Next day I decided to give it a good clean. The piston ports were half filled with kind of grey dry gunk. After brushing the piston ports I saw that two of the ports on one piston are oxidized / rotten away.
My question: can this be repaired. The outside of the pistons are in very good shape, not much wear at all and still very good compression (before cleaning of course).

Anything can be repaired. It's a matter of how much you are willing to spend. If it isn't an obscure instrument you might be able to find a parts horn to cannibalize. |

I think that cannibalizing is not an option. What I would like to know is if new tubes can be soldered into the piston. It's for a Selmer Chorus 80J. |

Yes, for a price. I refer people on that particular job to others. It may involve refitting the piston after port installation. Selmer Paris doesn't make trumpets any more, but you might write to them to see if a piston is available. _________________ "Strive for tone." -John Coppola

mcgyver, to put in the back of your mind, I had my Connstellation and Benge both cleaned and valve-aligned by Jim Becker at Dillon Music and he did a great job. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Robb Stewart did such a fix for me and I'm sure there are several others that can do it. These guys have big parts bins and should be able to dig around and find a match to solder in. _________________ Thane Standard Large Bb / Monette Unity B6-7M mpc

Well, glad to hear it can be done.
First I'll write to Selmer, but I'm not very optimistic about my chances with them. They stopped producing trumpets around 2011 I read. Don't know if they made de Chorus 80J till the end. |

I thought so to, but when I started searching for it on the internet, I could not find anyting about piston port repair. I read about rebuilding pistons, valve case honing and things like that, but never about this.
Glad you guys restored my hope.
So thank you very much. |

Oberloh in Seattle can not only repair it but they can make you a new piston from scratch if needed. I have seen it myself in his shop.
The piston was completely crushed from someone trying to push it out from the bottom with a screwdriver. I guess they didn't know they are hollow. It was deformed with a hole in the bottom and the ports crushed. He made a brand new one and did the plating and fitting as well.
If you are serious I would contact them. http://www.oberloh.com/ _________________ Kurt Magnuson

Another suggestion, Steve Winans, aka Doctor Valve.
EXCELLENT work, great guy to deal with.

I just combed through the Conn-Selmer parts webpage and found the one and only remaining new Paris Selmer piston, and it's a #3 piston for a model 1903 TT trumpet. Sorry, it's not the same part number for the 1901 80J #3 piston, I wished it were.
Which one do you need? _________________ James Becker

The piston liners on Selmer 80J's and TT's were extremely thin. It is quite common to see them with holes, cracks and large pieces missing. There are several different methods for fixing them based on what is wrong. On a budget with very tiny holes the holes can be filled with a soft solder. When the damage is more severe you can always replace the liner, but this would then require a rebuild afterwards. Here are some pictures of one I did (not a Selmer)
