Wow, whatta horn! Just arrived from Flip Oake's shop and, man, it sings!
I'm no Warren Vache but I've owned and played a lot of nice cornets from Eclipse, Getzen, White/King, Olds, York and Conn.
I've also play tested a lot of nice horns from companies like Smith-Watkins, Yamaha and others.
Flip's Wild Thing American Long Cornet wins the blue ribbon for me. The craftsmanship is superb and it plays as good as it looks. Notes seems to leap out of the bell. Intonation is spot on. And I can play as bright or as dark as I choose depending the mouthpiece.
I use Flip's design as well as Mark Curry's including his DC, BBC, and VC series.
This horn would be ideal for any application but I plan to use it mostly for Dixie. Hot damn! I'm excited about this beauty!

Never owned a long one, but my short cornet is certainly one of my "go-to" horns for a lot of gigs.

Richard, IMHO the biggest difference is the Wild Thing plays with a much bigger sound than either the King Master or the 80A, and I've owned and played several fine examples of each. At the same time, the WT is also capable of sweet, soft playing which, for me clearly makes it the better horn.

Does have the same sort of 'huge bell flare that the WT trumpets do? Wondering if you've noticed anything about mutes fitting (or not) without modifying corks for it yet.

Randy, the WT long cornet has a 5-inch bell with what I would call a fast flare. I don't have a WT trumpet in front of me but I've played one and my recollection is the size and shape is similar.
My impressiion is bell size and flare both affect the sound and that's why the WT sound is huge with so much feedback. By comparison, my Conn 80A with it's 4 1/2 inch bell with slower flare has a smaller sound with less feedback.
As for mute fit, I've discovered that my H&B cup mute fits closer in the WT long cornet but is actually a better fit than it has in my 80A. My Jo-Ral cup, on the other hand, fits too close and will require some re-corking if I choose to use it at all.
The rest of my mutes, including Wick straight, Peter Ganey bucket, Soulo bucket, Charley Davis and Jo-Ral harmon, hardware store plunger, and metal derby pose no issues.

The Flugelhorn uses Kanstul's 6" (the 1525 & 1526 use the 6-1/2") flugelhorn bell, while the Celebration uses the Kanstul #72 bell.

Some mutes fit right out of the box. Humes and Berg Straight, Cup, Tom Crown, and more... If you would need to re-cork a mute to fit the Wild Thing trumpet bell, it's not a big deal. Usually you just either add 1/16" to the existing cork, or replace the entire cork with 1/8" will work when replacing corks. All of the Wild Thing Flugelhorns, have the French mouthpipe taper.
Many times just laminating over your existing cork with 1/16 cork will work just fine.
As Brian said, The Wild Thing Bb trumpet, American Long Model Cornet, Shepherds Crook Short Model Cornet and the Flip Oakes C Trumpet all have a bell made from the same mandrel. The bell bends and cut points are different. Alike bells with different bell cuts, and bell bends are not the same bell....
The Wild Thing Flugelhorns in Brass bells do have a 6" bell, however they differ from the Kanstul bell, as it has a very different bell bow, and bell branch. It's a more open wrap as were the OLDER Fr. Bessons. The Copper bell Wild Thing Flugelhorn has a different 6.25" bell and it's a heavier gauge then the brass. It also has the more open wrap and bell branch.

The Wild Thing Flugelhorns also have the French Taper Mouthpipe. I also offer many different size mouthpieces as well.

Basically there are 3 different tapers....... Different brand flugelhorns require different mpc. shanks so that they fit that flugelhorn properly.

Congratulations on your new cornet Jim. Did you order it in silver-plate or lacquer, and did you get the copper or brass bell?
For a dozen years I have been reading the testimonies of players like yourself who have shared their blue ribbon experiences, if you please, after discovering the superior playing qualities of Flips horns.
Eight years ago my curiosity got the best of me, and I had Flip send me one of his Bb trumpets. This horn was so awesome that I eventually added his flugel and short-belled cornet to the pack.
Flips horn designs are amazing; I hope that you are able to try out a few of his other horns some day. In the meantime, enjoy that Wild Thing Long Cornet.

Jim, my cornet is also lacquer. I told Flip I really didnt want another silver horn to polish, and as you say, the lacquered models are gorgeous. Several months ago I played music at a nursing home where my mother is a resident. When I pulled my cornet out of the case, an elderly lady sitting nearby exclaimed, Thats the most beautiful horn I have ever seen!  I think so too.

Just popped for a Zoom Q8 video recorder. Spose to have excellent audio capabilities and okay video. I plan to use it to capture some licks for you on my new Flip Horn.
Anyone have experience with the Q8?

Hi Jim,
I wanted to buy one, however when I went in the store to see it, the images were too small. I did buy a H6, which is just audio, but it's very very good! It's been so long since I used it I don't remember how it works :^) To many things to remember with all of this tech stuff.. Can't wait to see what you get..

Thanks, Flip! I bought the Q8 to also capture some clips of my bands, something I've been meaning to do for a long time.
For this thread I'm thinking it might be interesting to demo how the WT sounds compared with my 80A.
