Does anyone have info on using white vinegar to take the tarnish off a silver plated trumpet? I've heard this works well but don't know the details. How much, how long, etc. Thanks

Rough measurements, a cup full of vinegar in a sink full of warm water, let your instrument (not the finger buttons) soak for a while (60 minutes or more).. then rinse and wash with a little bit of dishwashing soap (Dawn), rinse thoroughly, lube and reassemble.

Fully take the trumpet apart before soaking - if you're going to soak the valves, take them apart - and DO NOT soak the finger buttons-if they are "mother of pearl" vinegar will dissolve them.

Ummm, no.

The proper way to remove tarnish from silver is using washing soda and aluminium.

Vinegar (acetic acid) will speed up the reaction - especially if you use baking soda instead of washing soda - but you need to start with the soda/aluminium.

Do a google search for "silver washing soda" - http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/how-to-clean-silver-131048

There are many DIY ways.. Vinegar soak works, ok. cleans the insided too. May not do great if the tarnish is heavy..

Here are some more ideas...

soda and aluminum works, but works best with boiling water - I don't know if I want to boil my trumpet.....

And there are counltess commercial products..

Hello,

The difference is that a vinegar (AKA acetic acid) bath removes the tarnish by dissolving it while the soda/aluminum routine turns the tarnish back into silver. Use the vinegar bath long enough and (eventually) you will wear (polish) the plating off.

I can understand not wanting to boil a lacquer trumpet - especially in acetic acid - but the water just can't get hot enough to damage brass or silver, and the melting point of the solder is twice the boiling point of water.
