I'm looking for recordings of a trad group that matches our instrumentation: cornet, clarinet/tenor, trombone, guitar, bass, drums. No piano.

We're going for a Chicago-style sound versus the two-beat and tuba/banjo-backed New Orleans approach.

Groups led by Muggsy Spanier, Eddie Condon, Jimmy McPartland come close but all have piano as far as I know.

Any suggestions?

Check out the Ruby Braff album called "As Time Goes By." Ruby on cornet, with guitar and bass. Magnificent stuff, one of my favorite albums. No drums, but it might give you some ideas regarding texture and swing.

Thanks! Ruby a fav of mine! Saw him years in Chicago. Bad weather prompted a small house but it did't deter him from delivering a great show!

And no drums? Something I've been thinking about since our drummer arrived for the last gig four minutes before the sound check.

Banjo for trad and guitar (a la Condon) for swing. Any guitar player should be able to play a tenor banjo tuned like a baritone uke.

Traditional bands started as marching bands. Bass drum for rhythm. No piano. Tuba became bass when everybody went inside and got dignified.

check out the NOLA Jazz Vipers. Guitar, Bass, (no drum or piano), alto, trombone, sometimes a bari, sometimes a trumpet. They have a wonderful four-beat swing feel.
