Where is a good place to buy bottom caps for a Yamaha CR 2330 Shepherd's crook cornet?

Probably the best bet would be to find a Yamaha dealer and have them order them. That way you'll get the right ones...

Bought the bottom caps. Probably will have them, before the cornet.

Looking for a new mouthpiece, has anyone tried a Stork mp?

Yes, I play a Stork "A" traditional cup cornet mouthpiece. Stork calls it a "moderately deep traditional cup," and I'd agree with that. Deep enough to get a warm, mellow sound but not so deep that it would be a bear to play. For comparison purposes, I've also played a Curry TC cornet mouthpiece, which is also a moderately-deep piece, and I think the Stork A is in the same ballpark—similar sound characteristics but slightly easier to play than the Curry TC.

If you want to go all-out for a darker sound, Stork has their deeper A+ traditional cup. I haven't tried it though, so I can't comment on its sound or playability.

The 2330 responds (improves in most player's estimation) to heavy bottom caps. My experience was that they improved the horn markedly.

A set of Curry CCAPS in Yamaha threads is $37 at Dillon's. Probably about the same at your preferred retailer.

Experiment with weights on one or two or all three -- with/without the gaskets and internal "washers.". Some players use heavy caps on only the 3rd valve.

Thanks for all you help. Waiting on delivery. Not sure what kind of shape the cornet is in. For now I will use my existing Yamaha 14 e cornet mouthpiece.

So, I received the Yamaha YCR 2330 Shepherd's crook cornet. The lacquer has rust spots all over. Valves are excellent, slides work well, no visible dents.

Did give it a bath and disinfected it. Plays well with the Yamaha 14 E cornet mouthpiece. Curious on how it will play with the Yamaha 16 E cornet mouthpiece. I will find out Wednesday.

Used a wet dish scrubber. Took off most of the rust. Looks much better.

When I used the Yamaha 14 E mouthpiece on this cornet, the mouthpiece fit my lips. When I used on the Jupiter 520 M cornet, it seemed to small for my lips.

Is it my imagination?

FYI: There's no such thing as "rust" on a brass instrument. Corrosion? Sure. Lacquer coming off exposing raw brass? Yes. Rust, however requires iron to occur and there's no iron in brass.

Yes.

What would cause corrosion on the lacquer? I cleaned off the corrosion.

This cornet was from Long Beach California Goodwill.

The mouthpiece felt better and sounded much better on the Yamaha 2330 cornet.

If there is noticeably more resistance in the Jupiter it can change how the mouthpiece feels. The size is the same but your embouchure might react differently to it.

Thanks for the explanation on the resistance.

This is a possibility. Frankly, your mouthpiece has not changed in size when it's on the Jupiter vs. the Yamaha. It's still a 14E, still exactly the same width.

However, horns play differently and may play more tight or open. So, that changes how the whole system - you+mouthpiece+horn - feels.

The Lacquer is just a clear coat that applied to the brass to protect it. It protects it from developing a raw brass patina and helps the horn look shiny. It protects it from elements in the air that can cause corrosion. Finally, it protect the horn from your hands (and your hands from the horn) which can also cause corrosion.

So, without looking at it - I'm going to guess that there's no corrosion on the lacquer. Lacquer is just clear paint - it doesn't really react to anything. My guess is that there was some spots where the lacquer had worn off and there was either some discoloration or some amount of corrosion. It's more likely that it was the former, since you claim to have removed it. Hard to say without seeing anything.
