A close friend has recently joined a Brass Band and asked me about Mutes for Cornet. I don't have any experience with Cornet and honestly never thought about it. He needs a Straight, Cup and Harm. Which brands work best?

Thanks,
Mike

The bell flares are usually close enough to trumpets to fit the same. Occasionally, depending upon what his trumpet is, he might need to adjust corks for the cornet differently (meaning that he probably needs two of everything).

As for particular brands, that depends upon the brass band. Some may want everyone on the same model, others may not care all that much.

Go to a rehearsal and find out what the principal player would like and go from there.

Trumpet and cornet mutes are the same. He really needs to see what brand mutes the other cornet players are using and match that (if there's a consensus).

Thank you for the information. I will pass the info on to him and also suggest that he become a member of TH!

While they both use the same mutes, my experience has been that mutes that work great on my trumpet often don't work as well on my cornet.

Hi Mike

I agree with what has already been said. Baring in mind that I am in the UK, the standard in my part of the country, is a Denis Wick straight an cup. There is more variation with harmons. I find that the Denis Wick ET works well with my Yamaha Xeno cornet.

I hope that this will help.

Best wishes

Lou

I will pass info on to him.

I'm on my way to Church in a few minutes. I am playing 2 Morning Services today on Flugelhorn.

Kindest regards,

Hi Mike

You are very welcome. Please also let him know that I am based in the UK, and it would be wise to check what his brass band will be using, in case brass band mute choices are different in the US.

I hope that it will go well. It is almost 1pm here.

Kindest regards,

Mike

Kindest regards to you too.
