As you all know, I have that '75 Olds Ambassador "eBay Special" cornet that I bought for $69.96 w/ no MP. I had to pick up a Bach 7C cornet MP just so I could play it and get used to it.

Now that I understand the cornet vs the trumpet, I am looking at dumping the 7C and going with something nice and sweet. Something that just ...sings... you know what I mean?

Any advice?

So basically you like it with the 7C, but you're looking for something that'll make it a bit more cornetty without being too difficult to handle?

Personally, I'd probably look at the Curry DC models or something along those lines, I also like the GR#5 cup (but obviously much more expensive) and the JK exclusive line D cup is fairly similar kind of depth and attitude to the Curry DC (despite inexplicably being called shallow on the JK site)...
Equally, you could go for something that's a more medium-deep V (compared to some of the specific cornet cups) like a Bach 7 or 8 (the 8 has a much nicer rim than the 7) or a Warburton XD or something like that - it depends how much you're looking to mellow out.

The full-on brass band mouthpieces are huge and take a lot of adjustment, they're really specialised gear for specialised application and probably not what you'd need or want.

As I often do, I'm going with another direction. You have an old Olds. Cue applause for dorky joke. Anyway, how about going with an old Olds mouthpiece. Ebay has one. Don't laugh. Okay, do laugh. But laugh about the joke but not the idea. It's fun to use period mouthpieces in period horns. Sometimes it just wakes up that horn and you fall in love.

Thanks guys...

Maybe it's me, I don't know. See, I want my prized '67 Holton Collegiate trumpet to blast the lead melody lines with all the fanfare and bright penetrating tones that trumpets are known for. It easily does that with my Curry 3M. mouthpiece, which I love. But yet with the inexpensive '75 Olds Ambassador, I hear a softer singing tone in my head. I hear something a little more subtle, more mellow, but yet not too dark. I was wondering about a 5B type of cup with the Olds.

Sounds (to me) like a Curry 3DC might be just the baby.

The BBC would probably be too dark for what you're after, the TC is a different kind of feel.. I'd go with the DC, personally.

See here - post by Mark Curry:
"if you're thinking of a 3B. cornet, why not just get the 3DC? They're extremely close. Only difference is the 2nd cup on the DC cup is more relaxed (less trumpety sounding) than the B. cup."

Curry's B cup is like a deeper C cup, so you'd be looking at a deep 3C with a slightly more open throat entrance and a #25 throat - the end result is (for me atleast) exactly what I think you're asking for... sweet and subtle, but not brass-band dark

Thanks again, everyone...

More info: I'm more of a "comeback player" having been in school band in the late 60's & 70's. After that, I would get out my old '67 Holton and oil the valves, give it a toot every so often, but was never really serious or in a band or anything like that.

Fast forward to the late 90's and 2000's when my daughters were in high school band (flute, clarinet, sax, french horn, euphonium, etc... -- they became a "chip off the old block" and played darn near everything in school band, much like I did!) I got seriously back into trumpet and worked my way back.

Once the girls graduated, went off to college, forged a career, got married, etc... I joined a Masonic lodge here in town. When they learned that I play instruments, I got recruited to play "taps" every year for our lodge's memorial service. Then the Shriners heard about me, and next thing I knew I joined them as well. Currently, I am 2nd chair trumpet in the Shriners "Million Dollar Band" here in Richmond, VA and have a ball!

Trumpet - can maintain a consistent tone at the top of the ledger line, and can hit the high "C" and high "D" if called for. Can't "scream" on trumpet no matter what - it ain't happening.

Cornet - can maintain a consistent tone anywhere on the staff up to but not above a high "G". Maybe it's me, maybe it's the 7C MP that I bought, or maybe I'm still just a little rusty and out of shape with my embouchure. I don't know...

It might be worth pointing out that not all Bach C cups are created equal, or even close to equal in depth. The 7C is much deeper than a 3C for example.

That said, most of the usual options have been mentioned already. I personally like the BBC, even though I play flugel instead of cornet in the Brass Band I'm in. I just like that mouthpiece for cornet. It's not a lot of work to play, it gets a good sound, and just works (for me).

I have more of Mark's mouthpieces that I care to admit publicly, including the DC and VC variants, and for my purposes I find the BBC is the 'pick of the litter.'

Truth is, for reasons I don't fully understand, I have a fatter, better double G on it in a cornet than I do on any trumpet/mpc combination I have. Dunno why, but there it is. Maybe I should try to get him to make a 3BBC with a trumpet shank.

Try something towards the V-cup! Wick sells them - in my view (to my ears) they could provide that velvet, singing soft sound; having played C cup cornets mouthpieces most of my life (mostly Bachs also Schilkes I must say that when I finally did switch I learnt to appreciate the difference in sound - more "core" (=elusive concept but something rounder firmer darker). Then of course youŽll have to provide sort of a "singing" attitude yourself while blowing! On the negative side these Wicks could be a bit strenous in higher registers but they come in different sizes. Probably youŽll find other brands with V-cupish designs. Curry has a vintage cornet mpc line. Flip Oakes Wild Thing Cornet Mouthpieces. Deep “V” . Etc.!
As the saying goes "just my two cents".

Curry 3DC. There's one on eBay right now for about half price. Even new they aren't too pricey.
