Has anyone played the new Carol Brass
MINI POCKET TRUMPET??
I’ve played the Brasspire Pocket Trumpet
Which I liked but I’m looking for the smallest
Pocket that still has good intonation, smooth
Valves, and overall playability.
I’m probably an intermediate or above trumpet player
Who plays jazz.
Appreciate any info on the Carol Brass MINI.
Thanx!

Here is a video courtesy of HornTrader. Listen in particular to the section using the deep V-shaped Horntrader HT3 mouthpice:

I have not played the horn, but it seems pretty nice for a little creature that is coiled up into a 6.5" package, and retails for a modest $450.

I have mine since 2 mounths now.
It is the nickel plated finish but already some lacks on contact points. It is not really a problem for me.
The tone is very good for a so little horn but cannot be compared to a regular trumpet or a cornet of course. Impossible to get a solid low register as all pocket trumpets i 've tried.
The intonation is not perfect but acceptable. The mecanic is very good.the valves are excellent but need a breaking period with a cleanning before re-oiling.
The only mute I own which fit and sound very good is the adjustable Denis Wick cup mute.
It is a funny instrument .

Larry,
I've got a Manchester Pocket Trumpet that I purchased from Trent Austin at Austin Custom Bras several years ago. The build quality on this horn is very good. The intonation is very good. The blow is nice and open and the valves are very nice. I would recommend this horn if you are looking for something.
Regards,
Mario

Recently I recive mine from thomann, is nikel plated and it rocks , is so small that in my big hands it disappears and it looks like I have a mouthpiece in my hands and play the sound is very good for a pocket and on the bright side, I use a Reeves 43C but I did find yet time to choose the right sleeve.
For sure a great and very funny horn for travellers and for pros vacations.

Regards

Anyone else notice that INTONATION below the
Staff is terrible?!!
Particularly C . I loved everything else about
The Mini but that one damn rotten note nixed the deal for
Me because I play mostly in mid-range and below.
A Real disappointment. I read a few others said the same
About bad intonation low notes.

I wonder if Carolbrass will tweak the terrible
Low-register intonation and upgrade this little
Horn in the near future ?

Hi yoelarry, which mouthpieces have you tried this far on the mini?

With which MPCs have you found lower range intonation to be substandard?

Do you have some other MPCs to try out?

Before anyone reports an intonation issue to CB, it may be best do some more diagnostics... Anyone else found intonation problems with this mini pocket?

I played on it with my Dan Curry 3C. And also
Tried the plastic 7 that comes with the horn.
Most reviews I’ve seen mention intonation problems
In the lower range.
Going between low C to low D the pitch is ridiculously far
Off.
Damn shame cause I really liked
Everything else about the horn.

I use a Reeves 43C cut for sleeves and still did find time to found the right one and solve the intonation problem but for me all those pockets are made for travellers and vacations not for performance in audio and band gigs , i play this horn every summer for 30 days just to preserve my chops and is not big deal to have some small intonation problems the most important is to have good valves and be as smaller is possible .

Regards

Have you played the Brasspire Pocket trumpet?
Larger than the Mini, full size bell, and heavy but
I thought it was an exceptional horn all around

The BrassPyre heavy pocket trumpet appears to be a very fine horn, as shown at:

http://austincustombrass.mybigcommerce.com/brasspire-pocket-trumpet-in-raw-brass/

Worth pointing out though, that even at the significantly discounted intro price of $975, the BrassPyre costs over 2X the $450 CB mini pocket... I would expect overall quality commensurate with the price, which may include intonation precision of the low range.

No I did have try this horn but if I want a good all round horn I use my Lawler or my backup Getzen CB , as I told I want the smallest for my vacations and I will never show up in a real gig with a pocket horn even a high end one.

The Carolbrass Mini was well put together but low end intonation a total mess.

I grabbed one of these Manchester Brass ACB pockets before a trip to Europe. It's not a bad little horn--enjoyable to play and intonation is acceptable. A little loose but that's also a feature at times

I'd recommend that one, as well.

I bought a CarolBrass MINI about 6 months ago and it’s KILLER. But it’s killer for what I use it for, travel. I’m on the road many weeks a year, and I can pack it on my carry on luggage, and not have to worry about checking bags. With my Shh mute it’s nearly silent in hotels, and it’s not THAT stuffy.

The valves are perfect and I can play below the staff, and even pedal tones, just fine (even with the mute). BUT, yes intonation is off, I can’t seem to correct it. I just went through my tuner and I couldn’t really even lip the notes to be on pitch, it’s just off all the way through my range. It’s at least a 1/2 note sharp on everything I play. I’ll have to check again at full volume when I’m home.

Regardless, I don’t play it with other people and I never will, so it serves my purpose perfectly well.
