I've been down for a few days now with an upper respiratory infection and was wondering what others do when actually playing is impractical for reasons such as illness. I've been doing some isometrics, but I can't really do any mouthpiece buzzing because the increased airflow irritates my lungs/throat and kicks off a massive coughing fit.
Other than that, I've been catching up on my reading including Mac Gollehan's Embouchure Update which I purchased about the time I was getting sick. Any advice would be appreciated. _________________ My Gear

most issues should heal up within a week or two and many professionals will take that kind of rest from time to time typically when on vacation with the family.
if it takes longer ride it through and start back again slowly and with a lot of patience.
the only thing i do that would apply is the P.E.T.E. device. failing you owning one there is always the pencil. that's something right there. |

Just saw you are in Cincinnati. When I lived in that area, one of my best memories as a trumpet player was seeing Maynard Ferguson live at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club in the mid-'80s. I miss that area. _________________ My Gear |

Last Spring / Summer (May-July) I was diagnosed with Pneumonia. It started off as just a Fever with night sweats. At first I thought I had the Neuro-Virus. Felt very nauseous, and had vertigo upon trying to get up and walk to the bathroom. Those initial symptoms left (week 2). I was able to go back to work (week 2). got sick again and finally had a chest X-Ray taken and was told I had Pneumonia. My advice is to REST, Rest, Rest. and do Mental practice, (fingering stuff) or ear training at the keyboard. Best of Luck. I lost some work those 3 weeks, but it's best to get the right treatment /recovery time. I was taking a nebulizer (inhaler) and Musinex to try and get rid of all the lung congestion. I couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without feeling like I was 85 years Old, and I'm only 57. Good Luck. _________________ "Life Beats down and CRUSHES the soul, and Art reminds you that you have one" Stella Adler

REST.
Seriously, a few days away from the horn may do you more good than harm.
There are not many of us who are at a level where not playing for a few days will be detrimental.

Sounds like the best thing you can do. You're not going to forget how to play in a few weeks or even a few months. Don't do anything that's going to prolong or exacerbate your illness. _________________ Getzen Eterna Severinsen

The best way to deal with illness is to recover. The trumpet is NOT necessary for life, but many other things are, or are mandated for a recovery. Taking a few days, a week or even a year off playing is not the end of the world.
I've been through 2 serious illnesses and you just do what you need to and restart playing when you can. We can all come back playing, but we need to be in one piece to do so. A URTI? Go to bed and get better, it's nothing to worry about. Once you are up and functioning, pick up the trumpet.
cheers
