Thanks, DH. I just love performances on original (or replica) instruments.

Lovely performance. Laura makes it look so effortless.

So, many, many years ago, I was just a kid. I heard this piece and thought, "I'll join the band and learn to play trumpet so that I can play music like that."

It all seemed so simple back then...

And no, I still can't play the Brandenburg. But at least I can enjoy it when other people do. Oh, and I haven't given up the dream yet.

Warm regards,
Grits

Same for me. My band director played it for me sometime around 1965. Probably Adolf Scherbaum. In college about 3 years later my trumpet teacher told me that it wasn't expected of a principal trumpet to be able to play it. This was a specialized piece. I have gotten to do it 3 or 4 times, but times sure have changed.

Had I performed it 3 or 4 times, I could die happy.

Do you know, is it harder to perform on a natural trumpet or on a piccolo trumpet?

Warm regards,
Grits

relatively speaking, on a piccolo trumpet it is a piece of cake. Assuming you have the chops in the first place, on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most difficult, a piccolo trumpet would be around a 7 and a baroque trumpet a 20!! (or at least that's how it seems to me.)

I once heard it done live on Baroque trumpet by Friedmann Immer. Back then I don't even know if there were recordings on Baroque trumpet. I was amazed. And like a fool I asked "how do you do that" and like a wise teacher he said "Practice"

DH,

Thanks for the post. You know, my curiosity was getting to me and I had actually been contemplating getting a natural trumpet.

What was I thinking?

Thanks for pulling me back to reality.

Warm regards,
Grits

By all means, GET ONE. It's fun and frustration all at once. if you got one that played in C and D you'd have a ton of literature to work on.

If you have a Bb/A piccolo you can do all the stuff for D trumpet as well as the Brandenburg. On natural trumpet, for Brandenburg you'd need a totally different horn pitched in F which is a lot of money for one piece. Somewhat of a specialty

As an aside, it appears that common usage now is for a baroque trumpet to be the one with holes and a natural trumpet to be without holes just like back in the day.

Wow, great performance. That baroque trumpet looks so difficult to play.
