“Holy Grail” horn stand?

Ok, not really.😉

But here’s my situation: we have been playing some higher end gigs lately, and sometimes they absolutely insist there be no cases on the stage. Which means on breaks I either take my horn back to where our cases stored (which sometimes is a bit of a distance), or leave it on a horn stand.

What I’m looking for is a stable, five-legged stand that doesn’t leave the bell close to the floor (which exposes the bell to being stepped on) like the K&M and the small Hercules does. I have a Hercules three leg which is strong, but not all that stable. Disclaimer: I fully admit to being a bit overprotective with my horns sometimes!

Any suggestions?

Take the horn with you. I even take mine off stage on the symphony gigs. I'm responsible for it, even if a clumsy, overstuffed horn player knocks it off my chair. You'll be happier in the end.

You know better than this. Never, Ever, Ever leave your horn on a stand between sets. Based on your posts i know you know better than this. You have heard all the horror stories, well you and i know that they are all true, put that horn away or hold it, there can be no exceptions !!

But if you find a good one, let me know, i have the herc also, kind of tippy !

yeah, I'll have to agree.. take you horns with you. Unless, you're right there with the instruments, if they're uncased, they're better off with you.

Yeah, all you guys are right, leaving it on stage on any stand is asking for trouble, and I’ve mentioned that many times here myself. Mea culpa!

Returning to more sensible, horn-preservation mode here in 3...2...1...😎

Any and all of my instruments always go straight back in my case on breaks. Things happen - don't let them happen to you, especially when it's 100% in your power to prevent them.

Spyder stands meet your criteria, available now at Dillon's. EDIT I have also seen Arturo use a trombone stand, which holds the horn up to about waist level.

I agree that it's generally unwise to leave the horn out of the case, but I will do so if it's a proper stage area that guests cannot get to. Also I'm generally able to stuff my case behind a curtain/under the stage/next to the speaker/inside the stand front/etc., so that it's out of sight.

Saxophone players, man...I do a lot of big band gigs in cramped little bars, and each reed player will have between $5-15K worth of horns sitting out right next to guest tables. Bass players too...I don't know how they can be so cool about it.

Always take your horn with you. There could be someone like me who'll knock it over.

Example: I was a copyist for many years, staying up all night corying music for sessions. On one session, I was dead tired, putting the music on everyone's stand. One of the violinists had his fiddle in the open case on his chair. I bumped into it, but caught it before it fell. It was a Stradivarious. He never left it out again.

Ok, what about you gig bag users? I’ve recently (CAREFULLY!) started using a Cronkhite bag for some gigs, do you guys leave the horn in a bag on breaks if you can find a safe (“safe” being relative) spot?

I've used a gig bag for trumpet without problems. Unless it's run over by a Mack truck, many are really well designed these days.

Used to use them for my saxes, too, until I dropped my tenor just a few inches but put it into such a bad condition that I had to have it realigned and a big dent taken out. Solid hard-cases only for me after that.

I guess (?) I don't have that exact problem ... as I don't do "Big Band". I'm usually solo, or a 3- or 4- piece combo. Small stages ... Hammond B3 usually up there with me. Hence; a good place for the horn(s). I often play guitar, and THAT can be problematic. I use those heavy flight cases, off-stage, somewhere.

I used to have a leather, over-the-shoulder, "quiver" (just like in archery) I would use for the horn when I went off-stage in bars. Left it at a gig, and it was gone when I returned to fetch it. Never replaced it. Miss it. Should have another made.
