I am teaching a pair of 5th grade baritone horn players and they just aren't getting above a 2nd line G. They get a nice sound but, as soon as they hit F or G, they drop down to low Bb and C. Really over-relaxed (like relaxed 'blah').

What would Mr. Adam do here? I've had them spit to activate their buccinators, but I'm getting desperate.

Any Adam-oriented help is appreciated!

Michael

Just about all problems are the result of;
1. Not hearing the sound
2. Not playing with energized air

Can they sing the note they are playing? Some kids are so right brain dominant they can't imagine the sound. A small amount of mouthpiece buzzing can help connect the right brain to the sound to the horn.

Yell the sound.

Go to the hardware store and buy some plastic tubing the mouthpiece will fit into. Make them lead pipes. You know the rest.

Thanks, Bill! I have not had them do mouthpiece buzzing--I don't have any of my brass players do it--but I've thought about it.

The kids can actually sing the right pitches but I don't think they realize they're playing the wrong pitches. So many kids think, "hey, first valve is F so I'm playing F" when they're on low Bb. I'm going to have them do some buzzing and see if that jump-starts the connection.

I always appreciate hearing your input, especially when it comes to younger players. Thank you!

Michael

Imagining the sound while playing can be a challenge. It is something that must be practiced. Have them read a sentence silently noting the sound of the words in their mind. Then explain reading music is the same.
