Schilke B rims are nice and wide, as are Monettes.

The standard Warburton rims are wide and comfortable.

A call or email to any of these makers should be helpful.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. Never played a Monette, and not familiar with their numbering system. Any specific number suggestions?

It would probably be best to call them. I’m not familiar with Parduba’s size numbers, but I’ll bet the folks at Monette can make a solid suggestion.

Best Regards.

Great idea. I also will look at Schilke. I have a B6 and love it.

Not that I use Bach mouthpieces anymore, but a person I know likes the CW mouthpieces because the rims are wider.

I personally use Curry mouthpieces, and they're quite comfortable. I myself have larger chops.

There is a dedicated forum here on this website, exclusively dealing with mouthpieces.

I suspect the moderators that usually are vigilant in moving posts-topics like yours to that forum, are asleep-at-the-wheel .

I have a "few" Mt Vernon wide rim mouthpieces over the years in the 7CW and 10 1/2 CW cups with REALLY wide rims. Cups are small for me, but I am tempted to try them on some of the "endurance test" concerts on Eb Soprano that I have to resort to the excessive pressure approach to finish up.

Schilke rims are numbers, not letters.

I have larger lips - i.e. more prominent vermillion - "red meat" and don't find a wide/thick rim to be more comfortable or functional. I have a Parduba 5 that I got on a whim to try because supposedly it's similar to what Harry James played but don't find it to be comfortable. I can play on it but it only makes playing and range harder not easier. Harry had very thin lips and obviously his Parduba worked great for him.

What I find makes a difference for me is the shape or contour of the rim and not having a restrictively narrow inner rim diameter. I used to play a Jet-Tone T1A but as my playing mechanics changed I found the fairly wide, flat rim with a pretty square inner rim became a hinderance.

My current favorite is a Yamaha Bobby Shew Lead which has a fairly rounded rim similar to a Bach 7C but slightly more rounded and to me more comfortable than a 7C. I was surprised to learn the Shew Lead is actually a hair shallower than the T1A - it feels deeper to me, probably because of the contour of the inner rim.

I also find the Yamaha Bobby Shew Jazz and Allen Vizzutti which have rims very similar to the Bobby Shew Lead to be comfortable and functional.

If you want to try a fat rim see if you can find an old Rudy Muck "cushion rim" in good shape. Also a Jet-Tone Studio B.

Here's a Rudy Muck 17C currently on eBay in fair shape, it needs to be replated so it's not going to be a cheap proposition. The RM pieces go even wider/fatter.

I have found the rims on Austin Custom Brass mouthpieces to be wide and soft.

In my experience (YMMV etc.) it’s not the rim width but the inner edge going into the cup that makes a piece comfortable or not. I like rounded rims (or let’s say, rims without a sharp inner edge).

Warburton, GR, AR, Klier, Curry, Monette, Yamaha all feel comfortable to me. Most numbering schemes are logical and systematic and go along with a systematic change in sizes and depths. Yamaha doesn’t seem completely systematic in terms of the size variations but they are comfortable mouthpieces nonetheless.

Don‘t even try to make sense of the Monette numbering scheme. Other than the B, C, D, and the fact that smaller numbers indicate larger cups I haven’t been able (nor willing to) sort out the mysterious number/letter code that follows the initial letter. I did really like my B4L LT that I played for about five or six years but didn’t care for the heavier blanks. Ultimately found that I do better on my ARs but again, the Monettes I played were very comfortable.

I will suggest my line of Bájoc mouthpieces have a slightly wider rim than most other mouthpieces. Think of a rim width that is comparable to a wider version of a Bach 1X rim (with a different inner and outer rim contour profile). The Bájoc mouthpieces come in many cup diameters and models, depending on what you are doing in terms of playing—lead/commercial, symphonic/orchestra, etc.

You can check out my website and see the mouthpieces I offer, and from there, I have pictures showing some other brands of mouthpieces highlighted over my design to give folks a rough idea of sizing/shape comparison.

I hope this helps!

Best regards,
