There are a few parts that ask for a "Doo Waka" mute with markings above notes for "Doo" and "Wa-Ka"
Harmon stem in? Solotone? Something else? _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

If your arm is long enough, I'd use a solotone, but remember you also have to reach around to make the Doo" and "Wa-Ka" sounds.
Otherwise, I'd probably just use a plunger mute. Depends on what the MD wants, but I think the +- sound is more important than the tone. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Some years back the same question was answered on the Trumpet Master page by none other than Wilmer Wise. He recommended using a Harmon, and I assume he meant with hand over the stem. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Thanks for the responses. About what I expected, just a tiny bit disappointed I don't have an excuse to go buy another mute I'd never heard of. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

You need an excuse? Are you sure you're a trumpet player? _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

I talked to a guy tonight that played this show in NY, claims they used a solotone with a hand over the end for the doo-waka stuff.
And Don, no, I'm never quite sure of that one. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

The tempo on that tune (#3 "Comedy Tonight") is so fast the 16ths ("Waka") are impossible to "hand" waka.
I played the Do open and the 2 Wakas with hand over the Harmon stem, and then did closed/open for the 8th note Do / Was in the following bars just as you'd normally do.
Beside reading TERRIBLE hand copy work, my biggest gripes are the multiple fast page turns while playing; play, rest one bar with remove mute and then immediately play after the page turn, etc. It ain't the most well-thought out book.
But it's a fun show, and as we know....."Everybody Ought To Have A Maid...." _________________ Tim Wendt

And for God's sake don't lose track of which fanfare comes next. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Nothing to add, except this was the first musical I ever played professionally at a small theater in L.A. in about 1983. Had a great time - and of all things, the older gentleman who played the Soothsayer was a retired trumpet player who had been in the trumpet section of the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Toscanini! What a blessed opportunity it was for me to not just get to play a fun show but to hear stories from one of the (retired) great players about what it was like playing in that great orchestra under such a great director.
Best wishes,

C'mon John Mohan, you can't tell us that story without telling us the name of the trumpet player who played in the NBC Symphony. _________________ Tom Barreca |

Another "Funny Way" story - I was Musical Director for the show and after dress rehearsal some of us went to a local burger bar. My wife was one of the dancers, so I was with a crew of "prostitutes".
They had switched to street clothes but were still painted up like ladies of the night. I'll never forget the look on a clerk's face when we walked in, LOL. The cutest smile and surprised look on his face. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird
