Hey! What are the best recordings of the Shostakovich Piano Concerto #1 from the trumpet player's perspective? Who played that great trumpet part the best?

For my money you can't beat Thomas Stevens with Yefim Bronfman and the LA Phil.

James Thompson, Maxim Shostakovich and Dmitri Shostakovich Jr. Best recording I've ever heard -- and the same player and conductor also have a great recording of piano concerto No. 2. Honestly, I think that this recording is the standard.

There's a great live recording with Hakan Hardenberger and Leif Ove Andsnes - highly recommend!

There are a lot of great recordings of this piece, so try to listen to as many as you can find!

Some good ones have already been listed.

One of my favorites is Gary Bordner with the St Paul Chamber Orchestra. What a sound!

For historical authority, check out Shostakovich's own recording on EMI with Ludovic Vaillant on the trumpet, who plays with a truly special style.

A few others worth hearing:

Maurice Andre
Ole Edvard Antonsen
Guy Touvron
John Wallace
Maurice Murphy
Steve Burns
Peter Masseurs

And on DVD, David Guerrier.

Just a gentle nudge that Shostakovich recorded both of his piano concerti more than once. If you’re interested to hear a definitive version of a work, the composer’s own is always a good place to start, though we trumpeters may look elsewhere for recordings with definitive performances of the trumpet excerpts. That said, his 1940 performance in the USSR gives us a direct connection to the trumpet school of orchestral/solo playing that the composer had in mind. He later recorded the work in France with Andre Cluytens conducting, and this connection to the French school of orchestral/solo playing contemporary with Voisin in the USA, is also enlightening.

Happy practicing!
