I have a vintage Mount Vernon trumpet mouthpiece I would like to use but around 50% of the brass is showing.
Does re-plating a mouthpiece completely change it?
Any recommendations of legitimate plating services?
Thanks. _________________ -Russell Zimmer, DMA

It can, but it doesn't necessarily have to - the procedure is basically to strip the remaining plating, buff (polish) to a shine, decontaminate, plate...
Within that, if the stripping or buffing is over done at all, you'll wind up with differences - it doesn't take much AT ALL to start noticing it.
To keep it short... It isn't a dead simple procedure where you pick the cheapest option and be done with it - pick someone with a superb reputation and pay what they're asking, it'll cost you more but you'll probably be satisfied... And it's not like you can easily replace a Mt Vernon. |

I recently had a friend with some old Giardinelli mouthpieces which he'd had custom made in the 1960s send them to John Stork with excellent results. He said they don't feel noticeably different, and John even re-shanked one which was splitting at the end. _________________ Isaiah 40:8

I had an old Mt. Vernon 2 plated recently (it was raw brass), and had Josh Landress in NYC do it. His shop does all the prep work and then ships it to Anderson's for the actual plating. If it changed the tone and response at all it was minor, and for the better. Was very happy with the results, and recommend Josh's services highly. |

The Stork's re-plated a MV 1 for me this summer. It was very well done! |

Matt Frost re-plated a Reeves/Purviance 9 that I got for cheap because it was beat up.
I can not detect any difference between it and my Purviance 4*3 - other than it shines up better.

While I've not replated a mouthpiece due to wear I did have Bob Reeves silver plate newly machined mouthpiece part while I waited in his shop. I would certainly trust him with the job. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."
