|
|
My 11 year old was with me in the shop dropping off his brother's clarinet for repair. He tried out a seventies Martin Deluxe and loved it. I did, too. Warm, dark jazz tone.
I noted the name and did some homework on this site and elsewhere and it seems to me that this horn is similar to the Committee, though with a 4 3/4 bell and not 4 7/8, and I suppose minus the 1940's-50's magic, whatever that is.
He seemed to get a sound much more easily and musically out of it, and as soon as he switched to one of the student horns here (a jupiter or whatever) he instantly went back to sounding harsh and back to being a little-kid-on-a-trumpet.
The price looked good to me, definitely not inflated like the Committees I saw online and discussed in threads here.
Is this horn likely to intonate and slot like the other much-discussed Martins?
Would this be a bad thing necessarily for a kid? He's been only playing two years on a $40 Holton Cornet I picked up years ago? We're a pretty musical household and I he's got a good ear, and a better practice ethic than I had at that age playing French Horn.
One thing I like is the idea of having a softer darker tone around the house while he's practicing. I'm thinking that he'll want something louder and closer to what his section is playing later in high school for orchestral stuff, but that a jazz horn would always be cool for him to have.
Other ideas about upgrades and next steps as far as instrument choice are welcome. |

You didn't mention the price, other than to imply it was less than that of Committee prices.
They are v fine horns. Easier slotting than the Committees. Mouthpiece sensitive. Try to acquire a mouthpiece with a not-so-shallow bowl. "V"-shaped, or "funnel"-shaped bowl would provide a smoother, less-bright tone.
Mine has a 5-inch rose-brass bell, as on the Magna.

$399. Seems like a great deal. I almost didn't want to post it for fear that someone local would rush in to grab it.
I will check for compression before purchase, but my thinking is that if he loves it, it's a good horn to have. My French Horn skills have long ago rusted up, but I will play through it a bit too. |

Good thinking. I'd totally do that, but it's a bit of a drive for me.

There are a lot of music shops in New Haven. I don't think you have to worry. |

So we’re picking it up — it has a repair or two done to the lead pipe (is that what it’s called?) by the first valve. But it sounds and feels good. I think it’ll make a good purchase for him.
He’s hugging me as I type this! |
