Hmmm...having favorites is all well and good, and they are great for warm ups. But it seems to me the discussion should be about the least favorite exercises and how mastering them can help us all be better players.

pp. 20–21, #46 . . . one of the best drills ever for an introduction to learning to play in 12 keys.

The slur - p42 onwards
Exercises in mixed intervals - p122 onwards
Exercises on the dominant seventh - p 147-48
Exercises on the diminished seventh p149-51
Then usually a couple of the studies or etudes.

I have a lot of crap I have bought over the years - gear, mouthpieces, cases, mutes, spare parts as well as music. Quote a lot of good stuff in there too

Most of my music is either in a box, or has been given away to someone who may use it. But the Arban is the only thing that has barely moved from my practice stand since I bought it about 35 years ago.

Don't know why...I have my routine down and just play the exercises.

I wonder what it would be like playing these and having Arban stood next to you giving a lesson. I'm fairly certain he would find lots of "faults to be avoided".

I've always enjoyed working on the etudes in the back with the variations. My favorite three are -

Keel Row
Blue Bells of Scotland
Yankee Doodle

I like them because I can work on both lyrical and technical, and they are great for dialing in accuracy and flexibility.

The interval studies slowly with perfect articulations.
Tonguing drills for double and triple.

Big one for me is the early arpeggio study at the end of the first studies that goes through every key.
Played slowly it really tests ones endurance and ability to maintain focus.

Syncopation study #9 and 6/8 tonguing #31. Great for developing forward melodic motion in your playing with bonus style points.

Slurring #15 a real check yourself before you wreck yourself exercise on control and dynamics.
