I'm sure I'm driving you all bananas with questions about trad but here's another one:

If you had to play a gig on desert island and there was only room in the boat for five what would your instrumentation be?

trumpet, clarinet, trombone, tuba and drums... I could sub a banjo for the drums if I had to, or ask the trombone to cover the walking bass line of the tuba.

I'd prefer 6 pieces for this reason.

Piano, bass, cornet, clarinet and trombone. If the boat is small, substitute banjo for piano. If the boat is really small, skip the trombone.

Five bass guitars...of course.

Scoop of chocolate, scoop of vanilla, chocolate sauce, chopped almonds and the bananas on the side (whipped cream and cherry opt). That's the trad way to make a banana boat.......or did I misunderstand the question.

Years ago, don't remember where it was, could have been New Orleans or Disney World in Fla, I heard a street band that had only a Sousaphone, Trombone, and Flugelhorn. They played a lot of stuff and were very entertaining! Wish I could remember who they were...Great set they did!

Let me qualify my answer by saying that how you approach the music is more important than what instruments you're playing with. When called on to do "hot jazz" gigs, I've mostly done them with my core trio - trumpet, piano, bass. But in the end, the budget of the customer tends to drive instrumentation of the group.

If I had to pick a 5-piece group for hot jazz, I'd go with trumpet, sax/clarinet, piano, bass, drums.

Hmm. Plenty to mull over, even the ice cream recipe.

Wow. What a collection of cornets in your signature. What, if any of them, would be your favorite for this kind of music?

The most fun (funnest?) group I got to work with was Bob Adams' Blue Chip Jazz Band in Cincinnati. Bob played banjo and sang, trumpet, clarinet, trombone and tuba. If the banjo player is that good, then that. Second choice, replace banjo with walking snare kit (add small cymbal and toys). Guitar would be interesting, I've not heard that before.

Does anybody know if Bob's still working? Or around...? I've been gone a long time and don't see him online.

Just had a great session with trumpet, clarinet, trombone, guitar, tuba, and drums. The bone player is a recent grad of North Texas State and absolutely plays his bell off. He’s playing this week on tour with the Glenn Miller Band!

That will spoil you in the future. You are lucky to have access to such good players. Fun stuff. Happy playing!!

Is not this a six piece band?

No, the drummer plays clarinet with his left hand.

That would be rather limiting for his drums?
