Hi folks!

I have had fantastic results with using this book personally, if approached correctly.
It has really sorted a lot of things out in my own playing.
I'm very impressed with Flexus.

Anybody else had a similar experience with it?

Best wishes.

I have been using this book for a few years now, and have had great results. I was very fortunate to get a lesson with Laurie Frink in 2011 and so that probably helped me to be receptive to the ideas presented in the book.
I recommend it

I also have had great results from using this book. I think it’s put together extremely well.

This is one of the very best "method" books I have found. It's always prominently on my music stand.

Can anyone enlighten us to what the method is? Now I'm curious!

I meant "method" in a generic sense: a systematic approach to instruction.

I've never had the chance to see the book. Laurie was a long time student of Carmine's. My guess is it's based on Carmine's principles with things that Laurie expanded upon. I spent 3-4 years with one of Carmine's students and he had his own take on those principles. I also spent a year or so with Carmine as well. I know that Carmine knew what my first Caruso teacher was doing and was supportive of his rendition.

Laurie Frink and John McNeil both studied with Carmine Caruso. To paraphrase Frink and McNeil: FLEXUS is a synthesis of their methods with Caruso's intended to build endurance and technique for improvisers of all musical idioms.

There is a lot of good advice in the book, and exercises in five major categories: Preliminary Studies, which are variations on Caruso's "Six Notes" exercise; Flexibility; Articulation, which includes variations on Caruso's developed scale exercises; Pedal Tones; and Quick Register Changes. The exercises follow a basic-intermediate-advanced sequence.

Really good stuff.

My own experience with the Caruso / Frink method was less satisfying. It really didn't work for me one bit, and I was receiving instruction in the method at the time. Although I know many very fine players that have had great results, so to each their own! Just did not work for me for whatever reason. Obviously for the players it does work for, it REALLY works for!
