I was asked and didn't have a good answer: "What is a 'characteristic' study? so, I bring the question to you...

In the Arban’s book. There are 14 of them near the back of the book.

I think he wants to know what "characteristic study" means, as opposed to an etude.

Why would Arban and Clarke call these "characteristic studies" instead of etudes?

I'm curious about it as well.

Not sure exactly. One thought is that each study (and ultimately all of them combined) embody challenges to display master of a specific set of technical 'characteristics' of trumpet playing (tongueing, trills, arpeggiation, etc etc etc).

I think the theory is that if you can play all of the Arban Characteristic studies correctly, then you will have demonstrated technical mastery of the trumpet.
