Superchops players, check out David Perrico on his 2015 CD "Pop Revolution Live". Dave is one of Las Vegas' most active trumpeters and arrangers. You can catch his 14-piece band at Ceasars every Friday and Saturday night. Dave is a very enthusiastic promoter of Superchops.
Dave credits his upper range, power, and endurance directly to his studies with Jerry. But his sound is what I suggest serious trumpet students study most carefully. Start with the 4th chart on the CD, "G3". Listen to the brilliance, energy, and excitement in his sound. Hear how centered, focused, and in-tune every note is. Dave's pitch never looses focus or falls flat. He doesn't overblow, blast, or wrestle tones - not even the high ones.
Initially, most trumpeters hear this proper sound as slightly nasally from behind the horn. Unfortunately, this sends most every trumpeter, apart from "the naturals", in the wrong direction. Use the CD to get the sound on track and good chops will follow!
There are plenty of videos of Dave online. The audio, unfortunately, is not very good. So get the CD. But if you want an online video to to get started then check out "Go With It". Keep in mind that the video is a rough copy. |
