I took in a concert by the Hot Sardines. I was hoping to hear Mike Sailors play his Puje, but was disappointed when he didn't make the trip to Greenville, SC. Just the same, Paul Brandenburg was fabulous on the trumpet (could a trumpet player possibly have a more appropriate name than Brandenburg? I envy his name, but I envy his playing even more). Paul displayed some pretty nifty mute work and really nailed the playing style for the Cole Porter and Fats Waller tunes. His solos kept me smiling all evening.
The other instrumentalists (trombone, clarinet/sax and piano player) were all first rate, but not surprisingly it was the trumpet player who held my interest.
If you get a chance to see them in concert, you won't be disappointed.
Life is so much better when you hear live trumpet performances.
For me, next up is Roy Hargrove then TH's own Flip Oakes. Can't wait.
Warm regards,
