I've been teaching my daughters trumpet for a year or so, and now the older one is going into school band next year and says she wants to play french horn. I'm struggling with how to process this.

So I said to her, do you know who the famous french horn players are?
No, she said.
I don't either, I said.

Less counting and more playing .....in orchestras at least.
Less stuff to carry. More repertoire. _________________ NY Bach 07

Horn is awesome. If you don't live for the white-knuckle rush that is trumpet, horn is great way to go. Good ones can be hard to find and valuable. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I'm betting most school band directors would tell you that trumpet players are a dime a dozen and they would kill for more horn players. If she sticks with it, that could be a better shot at scholarship money down the road.
My guess is she will be happier and more successful playing the instrument she wants to play rather than the one mom or dad wants her to play. Just like in marriage, it is prudent to pick your battles in child rearing - this is an easy one to skip. |

Rent her a horn. Then she'll know how to play two instruments at an early age.
And the scholarship thing is a nice perk...unless you're so far out from college that any number of diversions might end that pursuit. |

Your daughter will be in much higher demand as a french horn player than as a trumpet Player. Plus you gain an additional color for your family ensemble |

Thanks, and I concur with all of these sentiments. I really just wanted to use that picture of the despondent cat. Plus, I can reclaim the '55 Special she's been playing! I like it better than my Courtois. But really, she'd still play trumpet a bit at home, and my other daughter wants to stay with trumpet, at least for now. _________________ 1938 Martin Handcraft Imperial #2 bore, 38 bell

No, the real disappointment comes when she tells you she wants to date a drummer. |

to double down and be more specific on that the biggest disappointment is when she wants to date a snare in the schools marching band. |

Or the bass drummer. Not sure which is worse. With the snare drummer she ends up with an ADHD-riddled future criminal; with the bass drummer, it's the dolt who will be saying, "Do you want fries with that?" for the rest of his career. |

Best thread in weeks, disappointment notwithstanding.
In my humble opinion, the ideal family should have a trumpet player, a pianist, a bass player and one other solo instrument to spell the trumpet player, though any other solo instrument is nothing more than a drone, a cotton swab to cleanse the aural palate in anticipation of the next trumpet solo.
Warm regards,

My dad was a horn player, came out of Eastman after WWII and taught brass and theory in a college. He played in faculty groups and the local community orchestra. He had started on trumpet as a kid and continued, supplementing his income playing dance gigs, dixieland gigs and shows on trumpet. So, she can do both. Play horn in band and orchestra and trumpet in the stage band.
BTW, I studied horn for a while in college and the pedal work caused my trumpet range to improve quite a lot.

She'll also have to learn how to finger left handed on the French horn.
Something to think about. |
