Hi T.H. Mute Conessuiers,

Can you please list some literature where these highly specialized mutes are played?

The opening of Pixar's "Up!" comes to mind, but that's all I can think of right now.

I'll take the suggestions and listen on YouTube to learn about this mute type.

Thanks!

I used the Humes & Berg version (ClearTone) in the pit for Chicago and Seussical.

I'm sure there are other uses.

I don't recall it being called for in other shows I've played, but it may be that I just used a Harmon and left the stem in, which is pretty similar in sound.

Going thru my show notes on "Solo Tone":

- Addams family
- Annie
- Anything Goes (2011 B'way revival, needed for all 3 trumpet parts)
- Cabaret (1998 version, both parts)
- Chicago / B'way original (both parts)
- Chicago / High School Edition (both parts)
- Curtains
- Drowsy Chaperone
- Elf (2017 tour version, both parts)
- Gefilte Fish Chronicles
- Guys and Dolls (2009 B'way revival...that will most likely never be licensed)
- Guys and Dolls (2008 Australian version)
- In the Heights
- Martin Short - Fame Becomes Me (will never be licensed)
- Nice Work if You Can Get It
- Parade
- The Producers (1st book only)
- Ragtime (2017 Ford's Theatre version)
- Thoroughly Modern Millie
- Wicked
- Will Rogers Follies

In every instance, Harmon with Stem can be substituted for Solo Tone. However, some MDs might be very particular to the more traditional "woodsy"-sound of an authentic Solo Tone mute.

Appreciate all the replies! I'll try to sample these on YouTube.

I don't suppose there are Broadway excerpts books in existence?

Thanks again everyone!

Annie? Really?

What numbers? I don't recall using a SoloTone on that show...

I did think about messing with the first trombonist and transposing the opening down a half-step.

You see solotone mutes used in NOLA in trad bands. For instance, Kevin Clark (Dukes of Dixieland) frequently has one. It's all about adding colors to your playing and soloing.

#13 - "Easy Street"

It's marked as "wood mute," which means Solo Tone.

I recently bought a H&B "Swish-Wah" aluminum mute. Of all the Harmons & bubble-style mutes that I have and to my ears, the Swish-Wah with stem comes the closest to sounding like an authentic, traditional Shastock Solo Tone mute.

In addition to the show listed by "trpthrid" There are times, especially with older tunes/shows, that I've substituted a SoloTone when "Harmon" or "Cup" is written on the part.

If it's a solo line, and I don't have a mic right in front of me, I find the SoloTone to have more presence.

MuteMeister's (sold by Warburton) "ShowTone" is excellent

I've done a bunch of musical theater yet did not know that wood mute = Solotone. Thx Tim!

Wow, ya I didn't know that either. Learn something new every day.

Thanks for the reminder. Not everyone in the section had a SoloTone so we used Harmons.[/quote]

"Annie" is the only show I've played (so far) with that mute marking. It just made sense, what with the time period of the show.

Here are some other uncommon mute markings and what, from my experience & asking questions, they mean:

“ET” = Extend Tube on Harmons

“Tin” = Harmon w/ stem in

“Tight” Cup - either wrap a handkerchief in the cup or move the cup closer to the bell. Could also use a Mica-Mute.

“Tight” Harmon - means Harmon with stem in.

“T.O” - “Tube Out” or “no stem.”

Wizard of Oz also called for a Solo tone mute, don't recall which song it was though.

I used to have a newer H&B Cleartone. The tube was misaligned, and the intonation was poor. Too bad the music stores and educators don't know the present quality level of H&B.

I'm wondering if anyone had done a comparison between the ShowTone and the offering from Wallace Mutes? Note: not wanting to turn this thread into an equipment discussion, there's already https://www.trumpetherald.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=141940 >

Man oh man, I just went through my books for both Addams Family and Producers because I knew there were solotone mute parts in at least one of them (turned out in both), and THEN I read your post.

Could have saved myself some time if I'd seen it sooner.

Cheers,

John

I heard Rick Baptist talk about this. He suggested changing the straight mute marked to solotone and good thing they trusted his judgement as it really made that the right sound.
