I am going to be doing a recital in November that is all music from the 21st century. I am looking for an opener. Something flashy, tonal, and no longer than 4 - 5 minutes.

Program so far is:

(Insert piece here...)
Sonata No. 1 - Gillingham

Intermission

Jubilance - Himes
Centennial Horizon - McKee
Durrenhorn Passage - McKee (still not sure if this is really needed)

Thoughts? Also, why not just start a list of 21st century rep. Seems to me like we are in a renaissance of reputable repertoire!

Thanks!

I'd look at the music of Jim Stephenson at https://composerjim.com/.

Turrin's "Three Episodes" begins with a fanfare, and might work for that purpose.

More broadly, you asked about 21st Century literature. Here are a few pieces that are worth considering:

Engelke: Sonata
Filas: A Very Short Love Story
Kallman: Sonata
Plog: Concerto #3
Plog: Musings
Plog: Scherzo
Prescott: Sonata 3
Reskin: Sonata
Reskin: Sonata #2
Stevens (John): Sonata
Turrin: Four Miniatures
Turrin: Three Episodes

Good luck!
