Nice work Flip! Are you playing one of those crazy Xtreme flugel pieces you make that you can drive a truck thru the throat? My 101/2XT is my most favorite piece..I can't play it that much though because it has to be soft enough..but WHAT a sound..so dark and beautiful!

Yeah, I remember that Lex cat on the TH..Really handsome guy...amazing aloha shirts..great hair..very witty...Cha!!

But, seriously, I did that album on one of Flip Oakes Xtreme pieces..the older ones which aren't quite as super-crazy extreme as his new ones (but get one because it sounds amazing) and I had a washer glued into the cup for an airy sound. I think you can listen to most of the album for free here: www.LexSamu.com Best, Lex

This is a great thread btw! But I can't believe no one mentioned Kenny yet! Kenny looks like I would look if I was his age in 1977 and dressed like I was in the 70's and spoke with an English accent:

Now that I've been working with Lynn Nicholson's and Pops concepts of playing really relaxed in my chops, you inspired me to get out my WTX10.5 again..I can't believe looking down the throat of this mouthpiece..the throat is almost like the backbore! I've got a few jazz gigs tues-fri and I'm gonna try it with full piano, bass, drums section..at least on the ballads.. I mean you played that whole tune on yours at an outdoor concert..great chops man! I can really feel all my core muscles engage on this piece even in the mid-upper range...to the degree where they wouldn't engage until the extreme high register playing loudly on a regular piece.. It's worth it to me to get that wonderful fat, dark sound...Thanks for sharing Flip!

I've only just discovered John Raymond and his trio, but I'm really enjoying the music.

Wow... that was some crazy inventive playing! Wasn't aware of that dude!

I loved at the very end where Brecker is going nuts with the EWI , Stern and the rest of the kids doin' the same and Franco is like... 'Ok guys, I can't get involved with THIS crazy nonsense!!!'

Yes Franco was 'on fire' and so was Brecker!! Kinda just skipped around but I'll have to watch that all the way through when I gat a chance... thanks for posting that ljazztrm.

If you haven't heard this guy check him out!! Great Flugel solo stars around 3:15. He can coax an AMAZING range of tones out of just about ANY horn!

I only have Soul Eyes where he plays Flumpet. Still, Art is one of my heroes.

Walter White is a freakishly good player. Not a lot of people have heard of him though. He's ridiculous on lead and, as you can see from this video, he's a monster jazz player, too.

That's some pretty staggering flugel playing!

I always knew WW had great lead chops but this video has opened my eyes to a whole new side of his playing!
