I doubt there's any way to find out who the trumpet players were...but if any of you know, let me know! Simply amazing... _________________ Trumpet is for extroverts only... no, wait... Trumpet is also for introverts who need an avenue for extrovertism! |

It can be difficult to get information from that far back about who the players were unless you talk to somebody who just happens to know. But, for more recent Broadway productions, always check out IBDB as they normally list all of the pit musicians for each show. _________________ Pat Shaner

Do you mean "Broadway" the location, or the genre, regardless of where it was performed? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

In the mid 70's I studied with Bob Zottola. Bob's dad was the mouthpiece designer Frank Zottola. Bob was in the pits on Broadway for many years, Les Mis I think. Bob is probably in his early 80's. Last I heard he's in Naples Fl. and playing 5-6 nights a week. Bob is an excellent all round player. as is his brother Glenn. Glenn is also a monster saxophonist.
I know it's a steady paycheck but it's got to be awfully boring playing the same thing every night.
10 -12 years ago I met a woman named Jan Hagiwara, she plays percussion for Phantom. She's from Hawaii and so is my wife. We used to meet up at at Ala Moana Beach Park every summer while we were visiting my in laws. She would be visiting her mom at the same time. She's been on that show for close to 30 years!
She told me that Broadway Musicians are responsible for gettin a sub when they take time off.
Another trumpeter named Tony Gorusso was on Broadway for awhile. I beleive it was Miss Saigon. I was at Berklee the same time as Tony. I didn't know him at all but heard him in performances at school many times. Very fine player. |

I've played/directed a number of "Broadway" shows but the most fun I had was with A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
The best I have seen was probably Les Misérables.
Musical theater but not "Broadway", the most satisfying was Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Roger Ingram in the revival of The Pajama Game with Harry Connick. That orchestra swings like nobody’s business, especially on Hernando’s Hideaway. |

I did a run of that show where they incorporated some of those updates. Big fun. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Into the Woods original Broadway cast soundtrack featuring the late great Wilmer Wise always inspires me. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I agree; the original Broadway recording seems to be the best out there still, all around. I always thought it was Gozzo or Rasey...one of those guys.
I played 2nd/split lead on this in High School along side my friend, and we both were in way over our heads. Good memories, but man we got smoked. Some of the licks really are tricky on a student model trumpet with a 7c _________________ "I'm 73 and I'm still learning." - Maurice Murphy

Which recording? Bernadette Peters? Trumpet playing on that one is phenomenal. |
Yes sir. Fell in love with the recording and then heard him do it live twice. His performance at the Tonys that year is one of my all time favorite gutsy trumpet playing performances of all time. _________________ EARL GARDNER - 4 LIFE!!!!!! |

My wife and kids and I have attended a lot of Broadway (NY) performances and I'll be honest, I've gone to some shows simply based on who was playing trumpet.
I've certainly done that for Tony Kadleck, Wayne du Maine, Dylan Schwab, and Joey Pero. I know I saw Joey 5 times just in Bandstand (Paper Mill, twice on Broadway, twice in the theater). _________________ Pat Shaner

I saw Wicked twice in LA. First time had Wayne Bergeron in the hot seat. The other had Rick Baptist. Both were great. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

From what I've been able to find out, musicians weren't listed in the credits of OBC recordings or in the Playbill program each audience member would get until sometime in the late 60s.
Also, up until the early 80s, being a B'way pit musician wasn't something to brag about. The real work in town (40s, 50, 60s, 70s) was record dates, jingles & soundtracks.
But there are a few crazy solid trumpet players who did session work during the day and played a pit at night. One who comes immediately to mind is Dick Perry. Dick, along with Johnnie Frosk and Jimmy Maxwell (both who played tons of shows) was also in the NYC "Tonight Show" band.
The time frame of Bye Bye Birdie means it could be Dick.
Here is one of his best examples - the original "Gypsy" Overture. The rest of that section were pretty happenin', too. This was when each theatre had an agreement with the AFM and producers on a minimum amount of musicians. 3 trumpets, 2 or 3 trombones, bunches of reeds & STRINGS! Now the norm seems to be rock band with a few extra keyboards, maybe one or two horns (if the audience is lucky).
It's also my guess the trumpet section was using Ray Robinson cup mutes set in nice & tight. You'll hear it.
