I remember watching an episode of Soundstage years ago, I must have been in high school. Half the show was Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd and the second half was Bill Watrous. He did things on trombone I had never heard before.

I worked quite a bit with Danny Stiles in the late '70's to early '80's. We had a few conversations about Bill and, even though the two had a falling out, Danny was always praising Bill's playing and musicianship. May he rest in peace.

I got to hear him the first time at a jazz festival with the Florida State University big band when I was in high school. They had three guest soloists--Don Ellis, Kim Richmond, and Bill Watrous. It was the most amazing experience in my life up to that point. I got to see him again during my freshman year at Southern Mississippi when he played with the lab band there. Almost made me want to switch to trombone!
Sad to lose another hero. Not many left from my day. _________________ Bryan Fields

RIP Bill. I don't know nearly enough about the trombone world, but Watrous is one of the best jazz musicians I have ever heard. _________________ Trumpet is for extroverts only... no, wait... Trumpet is also for introverts who need an avenue for extrovertism!
