Great post! It was very eye opening.
You explained you practice long times, Clarke, then scale patterns. How much of your daily practice does this make up?
Would you recommend a similar approach to a trumpet player who isn’t as advanced as yourself? Or is your practice purely designed for a professional who gigs often?
Thank you! |

Hey, CJ! I have a huge spread sheet that I use to guide my work every day in a very organized fashion. I work on many scales and patters - maj, min, dom, dim, aug, three different types of pents, triad pairs, general patterns, tunes, excerpts, blues, rhythm changes, Cherokee changes, Giant Steps, Confirmation, Woody Shaw exercises, and on and on. I've got a LOT to learn!
I would definitely recommend a very organized approach with specific goals assigned to each facet of your practice. There is NOTHING random about what I work on. In the blog I mention a 64 point spread sheet. I rarely hit all 64 points in a day, unless I'm home alone and feeling a bit manic. I DO try to cover all 64 at least twice a week.
so, to be more specific, YES I would recommend an organized goal oriented approach. A less experienced player might need to pick some easier material.
Final point here: When I say I've got a lot to learn, I'm not kidding around. My life's dream is to eventually be good enough, in my mind, to be able to share the stage with a Wynton, and Arturo, a Faddis, a Vizzutti or (pick your own hot shot virtuoso to add to this list). I've got a way to go, but I will get there, anonymous though the accomplishment may be. I.e., take what I say here with a grain of salt and just add my ideas to the wonderful mix of ideas you'll find here at TH.
Peace.
