Thanks for posting this, Tim. We're losing too many greats lately... R.I.P. _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

Met Mr. Autrey at ITG 2000 in NYC. He wanted me to play test a new piccolo trumpet he and Zig Kanstul introduced, which was to become the 1500 series piccolo in G/A/Bb. He was generous with his time, genuinely interested in your perceptions, and very gracious even when the feedback was not always kind (though it often was). I talked with him several times after that, and we maintained a friendship over time.
A genius and a genuinely kind man.

Spoke to him several times a few years ago about his time at Benge...
He made me a replacement pipe for my Burbank and was so wonderful to
listen to his stories and wealth of knowledge. Truly a pleasure and such a
courteous, kind soul...sad day indeed! |

Sadly, Byron's name is not one that was well-known outside of the trumpet community. But for those in our community who knew him, there was nothing but admiration and respect.
I got to spend multiple times with him at the Kanstul factory, worked several industry shows (ITG, Texas MENC, etc) together, and we had a bunch of phone conversations. When people would come to our booth and realize who they were talking with...you could see and feel the reverence they had for Byron. And once the word got out that Byron was at the Kanstul booth, people would come and wait for a chance to talk with him.
It didn't matter if you were a known pro or beginning student - if you had a question or just wanted to talk trumpet with Byron, he'd give you direct and personal attention.
To my knowledge, there are not a lot of recordings of his playing.
I also had no idea he was 93. When you'd talk with him, his energy and enthusiasm were that of someone much, much younger. _________________ Tim Wendt

Sad to hear about Byron. He and I worked closely together when Doc Severinsen was re-launching his third generation Destino line of Bb's and Byron put a horn together with various parts for the newest Kanstul made trumpets. Of course Byron was also instrumental in developing both the first and second generation Destinos and actually ended up assembling the last 25 or so 1st generation German Destinos in his Michigan shop due to production errors with the German guy who had been building them. Anyway, you can see and hear Doc on a wonderful Video called "Doc With A Latin Beat" on YouTube playing the prototype Byron had put together at the time for the soon to be launched Kanstul made horns.

I only spoke with Byron once, but it was for an extended amount of time and his knowledge was on another level of builders. To my knowledge (This being from people who worked with him through thr years.) He was an independant contractor for most of the music companies back in the day. If a manufacturer couldn't figure out how to fix a horn that had tuning issues they hired Byron. I do wonder if he was part of the group on the martin committee...But from the owners and builders i've had thr privilege of speaking with this guy knew what made horns do things rather then guessed. |
