|
|
Hello all,
I just picked up a Yamaha 751 D trumpet from ebay. Previously, I have only played a few Eb/D combo trumpets (some of which really had intonation issues and seemed stuffy). So far I really like it! It has a fairly warm, full sound, although perhaps a bit bright. It has a nice blow, not too stuffy. The valves are awesome and the intonation seems spot on (even 4th line D). For me, it plays better than the D side of the last YTR-6610 combo horn that I played.
Just wondering if anyone else has experience with these horns? It seems to me that there is advantage to having one that is not convertible to another key because it is more likely to play in tune. I've a played a couple of Eb/D trumpet where the D side was a little wonky. Does anyone else find this to be true?
Last, does anyone have some good suggestions of fun repertoire to play on this horn? _________________ Gregory Lindquist

Hi Gregory,
I have one... I've had it for a long time. I don't use it as often as I used to, since it takes me a while to get acclimated to it--need to plan ahead in preparing.
I've found it's very effective to play in an ensemble that's backing a choir. The sound stays bright and trumpet-like even when playing softly behind the voices. It also has a different character of sound that I like in those situations: more focused, less broad than the bigger trumpets. _________________ Bb Yamaha Xeno 8335IIS

It's a very good trumpet, easy to play. Good for a doubler. _________________ "Strive for tone." -John Coppola

I think that YTR751 is an excellent horn for its price. Good old Yamaha quality from 1970s. |

I have one as well, and I really like it. It has great intonation and a great high register. With a small mouthpiece it blends excellent with piccolo trumpets. With a larger mouthpiece it works well in symphony orchestras as well.
I've used mine for Beethoven symphonies. But now I have a nice Melk Eb/D which sounds better for that purpose. Intonation is still better on the Yamaha though. _________________ http://www.hornkapelle.dk |
