One caveat about spending a lot of time on trombone mpcs for anyone who plays off center on trumpet -- significant time on tbn might try to center your chops. It did mine.

Yup. For me, when things get really hectic and my chops get too tight and unflexible, I pull out my trombone - it relaxes the chops (because if you don't relax, you get a strangled, terrible sound), and makes you think more efficiently. It also makes you breathe more deeply, which is always a good thing.
I could go on about the benefits of occasionally picking up tuba or french horn, but ... don't lock yourself in. _________________ BKA! Mic Gillette was my mentor and friend.

I am only a hobby/semipro player, i.e., I make some money off playing but that essentially only covers the beer and the rent of the rehearsal room, so take this with a grain of salt.
I have played the trumpet since 1980 with a 12 year layoff and a restart in 2014, mostly soul and big bands. No need for a bass trumpet but I knew about Cy Touff since the 80s. When time and money finally were available to a little extent I bought a Prisma bass trumpet earlier this year. I really like it! Adjusting to the mouthpiece is easy, intonation requires some attention but it IS great fun. I also find it trains my intonation and air support. I also like the rotary valves (I knew that beforehand; my next horns, if any, will be rotaries) - playing Joy Spring, for example, is easier on the bass trumpet than on my piston instruments.
In fact I like bass trumpet so much that I am currently looking for a btp gig. Depending on what the future brings I may in fact play more btp than tp, who knows ... Hope to buy a really good Instrument, but those are expensive, especially if you like rotaries _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence
