Anyone play senior audiences unaccompanied?

I have, but it's been a few years. I often see some of them cup their hands over their ears before I even play a note! I played softer than they thought, so the hands came down. If I did it again, I'd probably play flugel or use an adjustable cup mute on B-flat or C trumpet.

Thanks for the replies, guys! I play regularly in several other groups that perform for senior audiences and a friend asked if I would be willing to play solo for an hour. My first reaction was I’m not sure anyone would want to listen to any kind of horn playing unaccompanied that long.

But then I decided it would be good for my chops, give me a different kind of performance experience, and provide a captive audience with which to talk about music.

I’m hoping to entice a few other players to join me. Having keys, guitar, a reed, and drums on stage with me would make for a more enjoyable show but so far no one else is seems interested in donating their time.

I play every other week at a retirement community for a patient. I use a straight mute and play tunes from my many fake books. This patient hums along with me. I make comments about the tune, composer and year published. Music is the last thing to be lost in cases of dementia.

I use a bunch of mutes, too, and I have a vintage fake book to fall back on if someone wants to hear a number they remember but haven't heard for years.

When I'm playing with my trad group I like to tell the audience a little about the tunes, relying heavily on books like Robert Rawlins' "Tunes of the 'Twenties."

Audiences seem to like musical trivia as long as it's brief and interesting. For example, when we play "Tin Roof Blues" I tell them there really was a bar with a tin roof in New Orleans whose owner used to have a kid spray the roof with water from a hose so the patrons would think it was raining and decide to stay and drink a little longer.
